Hood Pad

The hood pad found on the underside of many Vintage Ferrari hoods has changed through the years. Early hood pads were black vinyl, and later ones were silver vinyl. All have a fiberglass type insulation "quilted" to the underside. The pad is stuffed under the inner shell of the hood, and is held in place with aluminum strips. These can be buffed to a high shine.

With the discussion on the message board, I received this picture of a 330 GTC hood pad to help another owner replicate one for his car. If you have pictures of an original hood pad for another car, please feel free to send it in to tom@tomyang.com.

Tom, here is a picture of the hood pad on my 330 GTC  #9313.

The sides of the diamonds are 5 inches in length.  >From top to bottom the diamond is approx 7.87 inches and from side to side it is 6.75 inches.  There are approx 4 stitches per inch on the quilting.  The diamonds are not all exactly the same size.  I assume that some may have stretched over the years.  These dimensions are close enough to allow someone to quilt a new pad to look authentic.

I took David's measurements and made this diagram:

The material is a silver vinyl with a satin like finish, and is padded from behind with a fiberglass insulation. I seen some Daytonas with a very shiny silver material (almost like it was under clear plastic) but am not sure if this was original.

Here's a picture of an original GTE Hood pad. They were obviously black, and were black throughout the 250GTE Series. My 330 America came with a black pad, and early 330 GT 2+2s had black pads as well.

You can also see how the diamond shape is more elongated.
