For an original look, don't polish the brass up too brightly. You can add a natural patina to a previously polished part by boiling it for a few minutes in water with baking soda (sodium bicarbonate).

One easy way to get nice black clamps is to order a bag of (white) zinc ones from Mcmaster-Carr, then use a black conversion solution on them. Since the zinc plating is of good quality, the black conversion coat also holds up well underhood, at least several years on my car.

Also worthy of note, every one of those old engine bay photos showed rounded battery cable ends (terminal clamps), like the ones Mike Dunn reproduces at madenterprise. Heat lamps work well too if you don't want paint fumes in your oven. It doesn't take a lot of heat to get a good wrinkle. Experiment on some metal scraps to get the wrinkle you want. Worst case, paint stripper takes it off easily so you can try again.
