Re: Oil Change

John, I do not recommend using the hose you ordered from McMaster Carr. The EPDM cover on it is not compatible with engine oil. I also have concerns with the base hose, the non fluoronated version of this material is also not compatible. The best hose material is viton or fluorocarbon. This material...

Re: Correct Spark Plug Boots for a 330 GTC

The correct ends are Bosch. There are a rust colored bakelight material and are commonly found on 60s VW Bugs. These ends just screw onto the ignition wires and have a 1000 ohm resistor in them. I would bet the one's you received from GT are correct.

Re: Plug wire fire

Great news, I am glad you got it back on the road. Your findings and observations match what I would expect to see.

Re: Plug wire fire

I think you have a mixture issue on that barrel of the carb causing those two cylinders to run very hot. Look at the paint on the exhaust shield, it is burnt. I suspect your exhaust was glowing red hot and it burned your ignition wires. Note the plug ends show the most damage adjacent to where the e...

Re: Brake line hoses

I have seen a number of original girling brake hoses from the 60's. I agree with Steve that the photos he posted would be original. However I am not aware of anyplace that sells them with that texture. Generally if they have that texture and are not the ribbed style they should be replaced. Cheers Jim

Re: Exhaust Clamps

Nice job on those. I need a couple of those but mine are around 1.5 inches ID, so I plan to make some too.

330 GTS Pinch weld trim

Hi Tom, In light of your recent post I took these photo of the barn find 330 GTS at Gooding the other week. Thought you may like another data point from a car that has not had this item messed with since it was built. I was a little surprised by the ribbing on the trim, the trim I have seen in the p...

Re: 330 main bearing groove installation

The crankshaft is drilled to receive oil feed from the oil pump thru the main bearings. In turn, these mains feed and distribute oil under pressure, thru the crankshaft, to the rod big ends. Would the drilled passages in the crankshaft have any bearing on where the grooved/holed shell half is place...

Re: Engine idle problem

Another possibility... I worked on a 212 that had the same issue. Linkage was good, throttle shafts were good, but the idle was inconsistent. After pulling the carbs off and going over them I found the return springs that wrap around the throttle shafts were set incorrectly, the tension was too low....

Re: 330 main bearing groove installation

It finally occurred to me that this is why many (if not all vintage V12s) see an oil pressure variation when you let off the gas. I have seen it on a couple of 330's, when you are on the gas the oil pressure is higher, when you let off the gas the oil pressure drops even though the RPM does not cha...

Re: 330 main bearing groove installation

True for a typical bearing that has the oil feed in the upper bearing. These engines have the oil feed in the lower bearing so they are the opposite, that is what was puzzling me.

Re: See-thru tuning spark plugs

Hi Mike, Your correct there is a risk, the ideal advance give you a peak cylinder pressure 10 to 15 degrees after top dead center. Some engine have to much compression and have the have the timing retarded from ideal to avoid detonation. Other engines will have a compression ratio that is low enough...

Re: See-thru tuning spark plugs

I my experience your idle speed by itself is not enough to cause it to pull fuel from the progressive circuit, but it does contribute a bit. Keep in mind I have not seen your car so everything may be fine. I commonly find this issue on DCO3’s used on early Jags. I’ve also seen it on a Miura, a Jeep ...
