The aircraft engines of the piston era really are magnificent pieces of mechanical art. A big Merlin in-line engine as used in the P-51 Mustang looks remarkably like a super-sized Ferrari V-12. Tom: a potential suitable example of a radial engine to add to The Yang Collection might be the Continent...

That's right Ian. Basically you have to know someone in the Goodwood Road Racing Club to get them to buy tickets 'in bulk' so to speak... There is about a 2 year waiting list to join the GRRC too. You need to wait for someone to die off basically before you can join... If you can, perhaps try and g...

Soduim Carbonate.

Sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and sodium carbonate (soda ash) are two different chemicals. The latter is a strong alkali, but not as strong as caustic soda. It is used by the tons in the glass or aluminum industry. I think it is sold (retail) as "washing soda". But check the box before you buy. C...

Goodwood

Hi Tom: You may have to move quickly, if my experience is any guide. 1) Chichester is the place to stay if possible. The event had a bus shuttle between the RR/Bus station and the event. If you stay near Chichester, there is a lot of bus and rail transport to Chichester to pick up the shuttle. Faili...

Crosley Racing Engines

Hi JIm:

Did they use the sheetmetal blocks or the cast blocks for the racing engines?

Goodwood Revival Meeting

Hi All. Just a notice that the Goodwood Revival Meeting tickets have been on sale since Nov. 1. The year I went it tickets were not sold until Jan 1. so this was very early. Based on my experience, if you have any plans to go, jump on the tickets - they sell out fast, at least the desirable ones. ht...

I saw a Dussy engine disassembled some years ago. Very interesting crankshaft. The counterweights were actually hollow and filled with mercury. They used a bevel gear set up to drive the camshafts. Very difficult but uncompromising design. Getting the backlash right was interesing. Lagonda solved i...

Decisions - decisions

Hi Tom: To be - (a Ferrari owner) or not to be - that is the question. You have choices. (1) Trade the Ferrari for a pile of money. What are you going to do with the money? If you are just going to bank it: then--- (2) Keep the Ferrari, it is also money in the bank, and you can have fun with it. And...

Trip Report 1000 miles in 3 Days

Hi Guys: Overall: 1000 miles covered in 3 days: most at cruising speeds in 5th between 2500 rpm (55 mph speed limit) and 3000-3500 rpm (65 mph speed limit with a bit of cheating). Cibie Breakage

Hi Steve I got mine from Aardvark international: http://www.talbotco.com/e-code_lamps.htm I spoke with him - he has seen no trend in breaking lamps - but conceded that three lamps, installed by guys who have installed many, is a bit of a puzzle. When I take mine out, I will see where the cracks orig...

Hi Steve:

I have the same experience with one of the 2 Cibie's I just installed. There may be a bad batch. I am going to see if I can identify the origin of the crack(s).

Reporting in:

Hi Everyone: Loved the whole thing, in spite of the rain. We really miss a lot being so far out in the Ferrari wilderness. The only thing that saves it is Tom's site, where we have virtual meetings. Judy and I got back this pm with no drama - and an 18 wheeler driver tooted his horn at us in appreci...

Progress Report

Hi Art, Micheal Made it to Scranton, (about 300 miles in the rain) will be in in the AM. Too close to go back now. The only problem was the drivers heater fan quit, fogs up the windows on my side when not moving. I also tweaked the carbs a little for a richer mixture - in the warm weather we have ha...
