You can also have your old mirror re-silvered- I had one done for an Alfa several years ago for $35. Google "mirror re-silvering" and take your pick.

I'll almost guarantee your problem is a leaky brake cylinder. High manifold vacuum in both instances you describe will suck fluid from the booster into the intake, causing the dense white smoke. The seal in the brake master cylinder fails, which allows the booster can to fill with brake fluid. The vacuum booster is powered by intake vacuum, which sucks the fluid into the intake.
