Lots of people who should know, say that the smartest way to acquire one of these cars is to buy a restored version, paying for the restoration and getting the car for free. Sound advice, provided you can afford it. Not everyone can, myself included. Thanks for the reminder of the location of the sa...

Um, I'm confused. The 275 needs $40k of work? Pictures can be very deceiving of course, but with the exception of that groovy center console and the engine-turned dash plate, the top and interior look perfectly serviceable to me. Or has it been re-done in vinyl from the local So-Fro Fabrics store? P...

Rob: it's your money. And considering that you're going to be putting up quite a chunk of it, I'm a little surprised that you're asking us. Or even worse, that your contacts, who I'll presume to be people trying to sell you a car, are getting into your head with your permission. One of the few peopl...

Huh? "Take a 50-60 pound weight"? Last one I pulled, I had the car up high and let the trans and overdrive unit snuggle down onto me while laying on my creeper and rolled it out that way. But it felt like Konishiki had just taken a seat on my chest -- not 50-60 pounds. Re-Originals should be able to...

There are a few Series II cabs available right now, but your color choice does limit the field since most of them have been re-painted "resale red". I doubt that the one M. Sheehan has for sale with the coupe-style hood (no intake vent) will move the value needle much one direction or the other - it...

To me, the answer lies in your personal interests -- particularly in the era of Ferrari history that is most compeling to you. The tour inside the factory proper gives a great overview of what's happening today. Probably best for an owner of the current cars. The two-day tour is a brand new developm...

It sure took me a long time to figure it out, but the best way to insure that you don't get a bunch of stuff you don't really want or need at gift-giving time is to make a very specific list of things you do want, their part numbers, and the easiest way for people to get them. In addition to Sears, ...

Tach drive seal?

On the topic of work that be done while ensconced in one's living room (see below).. Anyone know what sort of oil seal is in use at the bottom/back of the Marelli S85A dsitributor that drives the tach? Where the tach drive shaft exits the back of the distributor body, there's a bronze flanged bushin...

I'm thinking of asking for one of those small "wheeled crane" setups like the handicapped mechanic used in the movie Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome. Remember the one? Sort of a Bosun's Chair at the end of a boom, built onto a four-wheel chassis. Okay, so that would be a bit of overkill, and I really do ...

Think you're right that this is a problem at non "hard-core" events. Assuming that the organizers don't rope-off the cars as at Ferrari on Rodeo, which is no guarantee that people won't hop the rope to get a picture they want, staying by your car the entire time is probably the only way to insure th...

Tom's right -- if your wheels are original, the hub and spokes are chromed steel and the rim is polished aluminum alloy. If the wheels have been rebuilt by one of the "modern" rebuilders, your spokes will be stainless. Not all wheel cleaning products will attack your laboriously polished alloy rims....

Barn finds

Tom's recent find of an Olds convert in a barn/garage (and of course the 330 America that's been discussed) started me thinking about the hours I spent driving around the backroads in the Midwest, craning my neck to look in fields, open barn doors and sheds for signs of desirable automotive exotica....

Hey Tom:

I'll be there as well, provided the service at the Indian restaurant hasn't gotten even worse than it's been in the past.

This car is one of those damnably haunting specimens. One of the most intriguing things about it is that apart from the obviously pirated radio, it appears to be All There -- something really rare in these cars as I'm sure most of you know from first-hand experience. Yeah, sure the price is too high...

Just want to weigh in briefly on the topic of sourcing modern "equivalent" parts for critical applications like wheel bearings, brake parts and engine internals on vintage Ferraris: it's a really BAD idea. Since wheel bearings are in discussion: SKF makes a double-row ball bearing that's a proper si...
