Re: Oil filter
Technically, the oil bypass filter is not needed, the 1310 is a fine enough filter (the 212 only had the wire mesh one originally, no bypass filter at all). If the bypass filter has a finer media than the main oil filter it still may make the oil slightly cleaner. However I would not expect it to ma...

Re: Oil filter
The 212 I have worked on has a paper filter in place of the wire screen filter. I will have to look up the NAPA part number when I get home. The filter is for a Mercedes. It does require an adapter that fits in the bottom of the timing chain housing. I have not had the adapter out, so I do not know ...

Re: My 365GT2+2's smoking habit
I agree with your point of checking the health of hte engine by doing a leakdown test. I also agree with Tom, I would do a compression test and see if #11 has any issues. If the compression is good I would keep running it. If there are some issues, I would try the leakdown test again to see if you c...

Re: My 365GT2+2's smoking habit
A leak down tester is not the best tool for checking for an oil smoking issue. It will give you a good indication of the piston ring seal and how well the valve seats and head gasket seals but it will not tell you anything about the valve guide seals. Under what conditions does it smoke? Smoke on st...

Re: Ignition Timing Light
Tom's comments are similar to my experiance. If you get an adjustable timing light. I recommend one with the knob on the back. With the knob you can adjust the dial with your teeth while you hold the throttle at speed with one hand and the pull the trigger with the other. If you go for the button st...

Re: Water Manifold
Gas, mig or tig, I think any one can do a fine job of it. Mig is the most likely to put a lot of filler material on it so it will take more time to file or gind it down. The welds are pretty short so you are not talking about a lot of work to grind the Mig. Brazing will also work, but once you braze...

Re: Water Manifold
If I were to go with mild steel, would welding the seams from the inside be feasible? john It may be possible on the cone, it will depend on the equipment you are using. I would be surprised if you could weld the cone to the tube on the inside with the equipment I have / I have seen. Personally I d...

Re: Water Manifold
Ok, some more ideas. What if we made it in four parts. The threaded boss you already have. Braze it to a short straight pipe cut to length the same size as the boss. Then fabricate a sheet metal cone out of a flat piece of sheet metal. Based on the diameters and angles it is simple geometry to come u...

Re: Water Manifold
That makes it a lot tougher. Some ideas rolling around in my head involve metal spinning, lathe cutting it from the fitting you suggested, lathe cutting it from solid bar stock, and hydro forming it. Unfortunately all of them would take a tremendous amount of time and effort and in some case equipme...

Re: Water Manifold
Sorry I thought you were trying to repair the tube shown in the second photo. I thought the bell section (I called it the center section) was still good. Do you have some photos of the one you are trying to repair? The fitting you suggested does have some potential. Those curves are not that easy to...

Re: Water Manifold
Is the center section of the bell head salvageable? If so my first choice would be to find a fitting with the right internal threads (if possible). Then I would turn the OD down in a small lathe to match the existing pipe, leaving a small step that fits in the center section. I would then lathe cut ...

I have never noticed the differance between 1 week and 3 to 4 months. But then I do not get cold temperatures either.
