Under Coat

Post by william »

My GTE has a very nice, what I believe to be under coat on the inside of the car "under carpets and throught the inner body. very nice finish looks to be a satin Black. The coating is not real rubbery and more hard. At first I thought it was paint, but I was able to dig my nail into it. The under coat is also in the trunk and under body. It looks very nice. Not tacky or stickey.

Does anyone know what this under coat is?

Where I can buy it?

Hi Todd,

There are many different types of durable finishes and it could be anything. What you're describing sounds a lot like POR-15. It dries pretty hard, and doesn't come off easily. It's not supposed to withstand UV light, and should be covered with regular paint if it is exposed to sunlight.

Thanks Tom,

I don't think it's POR. I've used it before.

This stuff is sprayed on and has a nice texture to it. Kinda ruff. It looks a lot like paint, but because of its texture and the fact that I can dig into it in places I'm thinking its a form of under coat. It was put on very nicely and not thick... I can see the panels in the trunk, floors, etc.

I suppose it could be a special type of paint?

This stuff was sprayed throught my cars. floors, trunk, under the car etc.

I would like to find out what it is so I touch up some places in the trunk area.

The car was at GT Motors, Glendale Ca., in the Mid 90's for restoration if this helps.

Thanks

Hi Todd,

There's a rough texture paint that is used for some modern German and Japanese cars. It's used on the underside of rocker panels and such. Maybe it's this stuff. Have you tried calling the restorer?

Thanks Tom,

GT Motors is no longer in business.

John Carlson use to own GT Motors towards the end.

Hey John, do you know what this stuff is?

The stuff is called "body schutz" I don't have a link, so just google that phrase.

3M makes it, as does Wurth. The Wurth variety is OEM on most German cars.

Wurth actually makes two slightly different undercoat products, but please be aware that they must be applied with Wurth's undercoat gun, which runs a couple of hundred bucks on its own. There's also a minimum purchase amount for the undercoat itself, which I believe is six (large) bottles. Your total outlay will be in the $400 range.

It's a very good product, and because the gun is just like a paint spray gun, you can adjust both the material flow and atomization to more closely match the appearance of your original undercoat, within reason.

You haven't said what you're trying to do, but if you're just trying to touch up a couple of spots, Eastwood has some spray can stuff that would seem to make sense.

The 3M stuff is 20 bucks a quart. The gun seems to be in the 60-80 dollar range.

The stuff in the spray cans is not the same, and is a big mess. Its ok for the underside of the car, but I'd never use it in the interior of the car. Smell and consistency is like driveway sealer.

Thank you very much Lee.

David, I have a pretty good section on the inside of the trunk to cover.

The Wurth sounds expensive. I wonder if it comes if different sheens or if this is obtained by air pressure in the gun?

Thanks

I spoke to Wurth today they said it sounds like their product SKS Stone Gaurd. Comes in black. I asked about the sheen and I was told the color is more of a satin finish.

This sounds like the stuff on my car.

I was told I would need to buy a min. of 3 bottles of the Stone Gaurd @ $25.00 and a gun @ $75.00. They do have a more expensive gun available.
