365 GTC/4 Power Antenna

Post by Fred »

Hello to all. I have been lurking for a while and this is my first post!

I have owned a 1972 365 GTC 4 for about a year, my first Ferrari.

Recently the power antenna stopped working. The motor works but the cable that raises/lowers the mast broke. It is a plastic cable sorta like the plastic line used in weed wackers only much thicker. The antenna is a Autovox S.A. 83A-12V.

Any idea as to what to do. I did a search and could not find anything on this - either replacement parts or replacement antenna's.

I also posted this question on the 365 GTC 4 owners forum.

Any help will be appreciated.

Thank you,

Fred Pignataro

Welcome! It is good to see you come out of the land of the lurkers. There is a lot of knowledge here to be shared and used. Anyway, if you want a new one, Hirschmann has some good power antennas. Somebody on the site used one for their GTE some time ago.

Hi Fred,

I think mine is the same model (not sure at the moment as the car is at Francois' shop). It seems unusual that the antenna core broke. Are you certain that this is the case or are you guessing? When mine failed, it ended up being one of the capacitors in the control circuit.

Art,

The motor works fine. The plastic cable broke. I know because I took the antenna apart the plastic cable is not attached to the antenna mast. In addition I do not know how the cable attaches to the mast. As a last resort I will take the mast apart to see what the connection looks like. What I really need is a new plastic cable and an understanding as to how it attaches inside the antenna mast.

My memory is nothing to write home about so take this with a grain of salt; but I recall you can buy a mast only with the plastic geared belt sticking out and feed that into the motor and it will reset. Now this was from my Mercedes diesel days when all those cars came with Hirscmanns so it might not be the same for Autovox...or given the weird sub sub sub category of automatic radio antennas maybe they are all really the same design. In the couple of antennas I've taken apart to repair, the top metal section (solid one) screws onto the end of the nylon cable.

These folks have helped me out in the past, & there's instructions on the site on how to change the mast.
Near as I can tell, all of the pwoer antennas are very similar, so they may be able to find a replacement mast that works.
