Heater hose for Ferrari

Post by carello »

I am replacing heater hose on a 1968 Italian exotic similar to 330GT and need a source , but better yet , details on heater hose. I have heard stories in the past of AeroQuip, Rutlands, Newco, MAD, GT car parts, and others , but need a quick update on competitive suppliers of show quality heater hose for mid 60's Ferrari .
You know the fabric look, left hand twist, 12-13mm ID, 18-19mm OD type of hose. Has anyone purchased this lately?
I bought a new diaphram valve from Jacques that looks great.
I can buy 1/2 heater hose from Advance Auto for $1.40 per foot, Thermoid black standard bulk hose.
Dont we want to pay $10-$15 per foot for the "correct good stuff"?
I see a reference photo at 330GT website under clamps
Training required
Thanks
Craig

Hi Craig,

There are a couple of products on the market that looks like this stuff in 1/2 inch id. Goodyear makes a has something that has the same look, but my local auto parts store only stocks 3 foot lengths. There's also a rumor the stuff called "green stripe" hose looks close, but the green stripe has to be removed! I also tried areoquip, but their hose, though with the right look, is meant for hydraulic applications, so it has a steel mesh reinforcement making the hose very stiff. It can make the turns, but becomes very hard to clamp with the original coplia fasteners.

I know this stuff is not cheap that Newco sells, but it's always a factor of time over money. In the long run, my customers can chase leaks, splice short lengths together, wipe the letters off, or buy the stuff that works and be done with it. What do I use on my personal car? Napa heater hose, no stickers.

Thanks Tom, i went to Newco website, but i dont see anything that looks correct for 60's era heater hose.
Anybody purchase the "correct " heater hose lately?
Is a sample , dimensions, or ? of the correct product posted anywhere on line?
The three pieces i need are 18", 33", 69".

I'd give Neil a call at Newco, but I have a scrap piece that came from him. I can bring it with me next week when I'm down for the Radcliffe Event. Will you be there?

Sample of one type of what was called "driver" show car heater hose from Dew Motorcars. I have 4 original band clamps for 19mm and they do not want to be mishapen easily to accomodate 21mm. Seems like a small point, but the $1.40 Thermoid cheapo black hose (no wrap, no spiral) fits the clamps just fine.
Anyway, anybody got hose?

Here is what I use

Aeroquip model 2556 -8 hose same dimensions as original slightly smaller space between lines in the wrap but it will pass.

I think its $1.59 a foot so just a bit more than parts store smooth rubber hose

I buy all my Aeroquip stuff from Murdock Industrial which has the web distribution for Aeroquip.cc

Thanks Zac, i dont find a satisfying picture of the 2556-8 to get a feel for what it actually looks like. I will check my local sources for stock to get a first hand look.

I have wasted enough time on heater hose research that the cost of the hose now seems unimportant. I simply need 10 foot of hose to look and fit the part of a professional restoration. I would like to avoid changing the 4ea oem fenderwell, P clamps for larger clamps. The insanity of details gets to me every now and then.

I hear you Craig, I am way to obsessed with the details myself.

for what its worth you can always get the Copiglia clamp kits from the Mercedes restoration shops for not a lot of money and start with fresh band & cotter keys, it even comes in a nice little plastic case with a lid

here are pictures of 2556 aeroquip and here is a side by side with some original heater hose

Hi Zac, The Aeroquip 2556 with what looks like a smaller OD , maybe in the 18-19mm range, with left hand spiral looks to be a good choice for me. I will pursue it. Thank you for the close ups

My current project does not need Copiglia clamps on the heater hoses, but the Mercedes connection is noted, thanks!

All things considered, there is a certain "look" to these 60's era heater hoses that must be achieved to keep me satisfied. So far the Sample#1, shown earlier in this thread, has the best "look" of all to me at this point. I ordered some Aeroquip 2556-8. I can always use it on the Packard if it is not the right "look".

Is there a Ferrari website, like Kerry's, with a review of the liquid hose type/sizes/materials for 60's era Ferrari ?
Certainly 1960 cant be same as 1965 or 1969.
spark plug wire sets
window rubber profiles
interior fabrics
carpet
paint finishes on engine components
paint finishes on suspension componets
plating finishes on engine components
somebody got a free moment to work this up?
thanks

I received the Aeroquip 2556-8 hose from Murdock Industrial today and it could not be better! It is exactly what I was looking for to duplicate this 1968 OEM heater hose.....fits the heater core, diaphram valve, engine spigots......the OEM "P" clamps that fasten the hose to the wheel well fit perfect....the LH spiral is correct, the fabric wrap look is perfect. Thank you Zac for the pictures and the supplier!
Yale, i am just babbling again, frustrated with quickly resolving my own restoration issues.
Thanks to all for their input on this detail.

Glad your happy with the hose Craig, I wouldn't lead you astray. A little note two that if you want to remove the white writing a little brake cleaner takes it right off and if you want to bring the like new look just spray the hose with a little silicone spray and wipe with a towel.

On another note the -6 size us the original hose for the fuel lines on Dinos, Daytonas, GTCs and C4s. The original cars I have seen have the same hose with the same part number on it.

I received the hose I ordered from ebay. Even though it is marked Aeroquip 2556-8, it does not really show the spiral fabric outer layer. Maybe too old?
