Our friends in the path of Sandy
Our friends in the path of Sandy
I just wanted to find out how the Yanger's in the path of Sandy are doing?
I got an email from Buddy Obara (west of Philadelphia). He's fine, little damage, but on generator for power.
Al Pezzella/NJ?
Yale Elevev/NYC?
Michael Greenspan/NYC and CT?
Tom Yang/Upper NY state?
Richard Garre/MD?
Peter Polasek/NJ?
Michael Bayer/DC?
Sam Hallowell/RI?
Mike Meehan/upper NY state?
and the others I missed as Sandy covered such a large area.
Of course, the ones not responding are probably w/o power and/or internet!

Re: Our friends in the path of Sandy
We were very lucky. Trees behind the house gave way in the high winds but fell away from the house. We lost power at 5:30 Monday night but got it back 10:30 Tuesday night. Dinner and reading in bed by candle light was fun for a night or two but if the freezer had unfroze on Wednesday the fun would have soured.
Our son was Ok in lower Manhattan but the total loss of power made him trek up to our apartment uptown with five friends who were in similar straits. I think they are still camping out there.
All in all, we are very thankful.
Thanks for asking Kerry.

Re: Our friends in the path of Sandy
Hi Kerry,
Thanks for asking. My house made it through unscathed. We had some howling winds, and a worrisome night, but in the morning I was surprised to find my power still on! I'm sure this was from having a generator at the ready with enough fuel for two days.
Francois faired a little worse. I went down today to try to get some work done despite the fact he was working off his generator. Trees were down all over the place, and many were tangled in power lines. I took several detours to get to his house, but managed to get a few of hours of work in before heading out to check on my mother in NJ.
Jersey was pretty bad as well. For the few gas stations on generator power, they were inundated with people carrying gas cans. People don't realize how thirsty 15K generators can be!
I hope everyone does O.K. in the recovery. Good luck!
Tom

Kerry, it was nice of you to ask. Patty and I are fine, fought a wet basement through the night but all is well. Tom I hope your Mom is okay, my relatives in New Jersey had a lot of trees down.

Kerry,
Thanks for asking. We are doing well. Trees are down all around us, but our house didn't have any major damage. Our power (and phone, cable, Internet) is down for the count - PSE&G is estimating Nov 9th to restore it. My AT&T iPhone rarely connects to anything, which is pretty much how i normally describe it, bit now it is even worse than usual. Wife's verizon Iphone works great! We have an 1800 watt "little generator that could" type generator that we are also letting our neighbor tap into, but it is enough for the essentials (no heat though). Finding gas for the generator is not easy. I've been wrenching on the 330 by battery powered light when I find time. Could be better, but many are much worse off and we feel relatively fortunate.

Has anyone heard from Mark Dempsey? He's a little inland but his wife Lynn has a shop in one of the Maryland coastal villages.

Re: Our friends in the path of Sandy
Hi Kerry,
thanks for being concerned, we are lucky at home, we only lost power for three days, ran on generator, my beach house in seaside park seems to be one of the few that has very little damage but I'm not sure if water got into house and we are not allowed to go to island for at least a month. Our community was very lucky because north and south of us people have lost everything.

Re: Our friends in the path of Sandy
We woke up at 5:30 this morning because all the lights in the house were on! Electricity, hooorray!!! NO electricity for the last week. Cooking over a bunson burner, reading by candlelight, eating fondue and guacamole. Some of the local Resturants down here were either giving away cooked food or in some cases grilling steaks on the sidewalk. No food or way to cook it in NYC below 27th st and at 27th street all the stores and coffe ships were rammed with people from downtown. NYU, which is near me, had generators and I guess by building code, had receptacles outside their newer buildings, tons of folks sitting on the sidewalks charging their phones and computers. I will say it did feel healthier, eating one small meal a day, walking up 3 to 9 flights of stairs multiple times a day, under heated but not miserable houses. Luckily we had water. Some people down here didn't. Con Ed did start giving out dry ice which luckily for us saved the 15 pounds of frozen tomatoe sauce we make every fall from 50 pounds of fresh tomatoes.

At 7pm this is what was happening, a 1/2 hour after I went in the door. all this time it was just a light rain, this is all the Hudson River over flowing it's banks, 1/2 a mile inland amazingly enough to Hudson Street, (which is a continuation of 8th Avenue.)

Re: Our friends in the path of Sandy
My heart goes out to all the folks in the path of the storm. What a week for you. We had 10 days in winter with no power here in Eastern Ontario in the ice storm of 1998, and it is was an interesting time. Our population is so much less dense and roads and bridges were all functioning after about 10 hours, no house damage, so other than power, not the disaster that I see in your area.
Yale - how did the water come up so quickly, I think of tides and storm surge being slow, but from the pictures I have seen, it looks like a wave? And your car, the one with the good Karma, how did it fare?

Re: Our friends in the path of Sandy
Well the Porsche was fine and in fact was the only car available to me as the Audi was on a lift in the electricity less local garage.
I think this storm surge happened so fast because the winds increased speed to around 80 miles an hour right at high tide on the night of a full moon. My building was bought four years ago by an Abu Dhabi real estate trust and so we thought they' offer us money to move. All the places we considered buying in Brooklyn got flooded, yikes. They did offer us a good amount of money this year but a good amount of money doesn't get you much in NYC.
