365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
Re: 365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
Greetings... Check your coolant for combustion gasses. This could be a leaky headgasket pressurizing the cooling system. Worse yet, it could be a leak in the head casting.

Hi A.D.,
I was just thinking about you and your family when I read about the Pandemic in India. I hope you're doing well and safe.
I can't believe the struggles you've been having with this car, but I agree with Tim, there is possibly a leak of cylinder pressure into the cooling system. I hope it's just a head gasket, even though that's no easy task to address. If you need to take a head off, please let us know before you take anything apart so we can walk you through the process. Taking a couple of steps before disassembly will make assembly a lot easier and problem free.
They make exhaust gas analyzer kits that you can draw coolant into and it will let you know if there is the presence of exhaust gas in the coolant.Do search "exhaust gas tester coolant" and you will see the tester you need to buy.
Good luck, Stay Safe, and Healthy.
Tom

Hi A D, could be a number of things obviously. If the coolant is not getting hot it may not be circulating through the motor. Check for obstructions such as a stuck thermostat or the radiator not flowing properly and is the water pump pushing coolant. Good luck,Mike

Re: 365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
Hello from a sunny India
The points have been troubling me and I
Would like to replace them with Petronix for
a permanent fix.
I've found a supplier but he needs the
distributor model number.
The tag plate on my distributors is blank
and there are no other markings on the distributor.
My questions:
Would anyone know the distributor model
nr for my car 12171?
Are they Marelli S85 A?
Does anyone know of a Petronix specialist
for old Ferrari’s? Name and Tel Nr or E Mail?
As always, very grateful for your help!

Re: 365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
Hi AD,
I'm not a fan of switching to Pertronix, but have to admit when it's set up correctly, it seems to work well. The problem is making sure the switch isn't masking other problems with the distributors. Pertronix is set up to fire with two units, one in each distributor with each one firing 6 cylinders.
The distributor on your 365 is a S85A
The advance of the distributor will still be dependent on the distributor, and any issues with the distributor will not be magically solved with the installation of the pertronix unit.
In hopes to dissuade you from going electronic, what are the problems with your distributors?
Good luck!
Tom

Re: 365 GT 2 + 2 restoration
Hi Tom
Thanks for the response.
The current issue is that
Points become black .
Cylinders 1,2,3 stop firing .
We Remove the distributors ,
clean the points , set them and once again
and we are fine.
However after a while the issue returns.
Similar issues on other cars got permanently fixed
by moving to Pertronix.
Do you know anyone who is a specialist
for vintage Ferrari setups at Pertronix?
Thanks for the response.

Have you checked your condensers? Even new ones can sometimes be bad. Are you running resistors on the coils? What's the voltage at the + side of the coil with key on?
The problem with pertronix set up it it needs to be done with the car to time the magnetic pickup with the flywheel marks. The plate that gets installed allows the pickup to be positioned anywhere so knowing where AF10 is the trick.
