Dont know Mr. Coren but does not sound like a comprehensive PPI , must pull plugs for compession / leak down tests . $600 seems high to me for what is a visual inspection , others correct me if Im wrong about dollar figures.
I had a PPI done on my old 400i at Blackhorse Motors in Los Angeles. It was about half that much and included a compression/leakdown check, and believe me, pulling 12 plugs on a 400i is a b*tch. Without compression/leakdown, I wouldn't pay more than $200.
Mr. Coren was recommended to me by Michael Sheehan. I was going to use him for an appraisal for insur purposes, but have been procrastinating. Thus, I have no opinion about the guy, but I do have an opinion about $600 and not pull plugs: BULL____!
Thanks guys for the reply.
I agree there is no way I would pay $600. I need to call him back and ask him what I get for my money! I do know he told me he does not pull the plugs. I leave Thursday to look at the car (250 GTE) any other suggestions for a PPI or someone to just look the car over? Cars in the L.A. area.
Go see Carl at Black Horse Motors in Los Angeles. He knows GTEs quite well. Also, there is Richard Freshman at Fossil Motorsport in Chatsworth.
Good Luck.
I spoke to Carl, He says he does not have the time to go to the car. I need someone to travel to the car in person and take a look. Car runs and drives No plates or insurance to drive it. Can I find Richard on the Web?
The two shops in L.A. I like are, Grand touring Classics (Norbert Hofer) 562 290-0110 and FAI (Rod Drew)949 6316373. Both are busy shops, and not sure if they will travel to look at a car.
Gary Bobileff will travel to the car and should be able to do a thorough inspection (858-622-1600). He's in San Diego, but pops up to LA area to look at cars all the time. In fact, he often travels all over the world inspecting cars for his clients. Gary saved my butt on a Countach I was looking at. Everything looked ok, but then Gary checked his records and found that he had serviced the same car in 1989, at which time it had more miles on the odometer than in 2004. The broker selling the car claimed ignorance, of course.
Is there a lift available where the car is at? Getting under the car to properly inspect for rust is, IMHO, at least as important as a compression test.
