Oil Filters

Post by william »

Where are guys buying oil filters for there GTE? I checked my local Walmart no luck, then went to Auto Zone. They told me they could no longer get the PH number and could not get the PB number. They said the PH filter was discontinued. Any suggestions on a source to find the fram's? Auto Zone said the could cross the numbers into STP filters.

Thanks as always

William,

I ordered some recently no problem. I have not had any problems with the Fram filters and think they are quite suitable for the GTE. I am careful to let the car warm up before any moderate use.

My (AZ) Checker Autoparts store orders the Fram 2801-1, now renumbered by Fram in their new system as PH28041. NAPA always wants to cross reference to their NAPA house brand when I have asked them for this number. These are also used in many Porsches and are quite popular. I have never used any other brands other than Baldwin which are easilly available from the Ferrari parts guys. Be sure to apply some grease to the rubber seal ring when installing any filter, and do not rev the crap out of any cold engine thus avoiding any possible seal failure, i.e. oil shooting all over! The PB50 filters are becoming a little harder to find, Checker will not carry them in their warehouse, but can usually find them in one of their stores by using their computer look up system. I have used the PH28041's in everything from my 250 to 512BBi with execellent results.

Sorry, the last line above should have read - used in everything from my 275GTB/4 to our 512BBi. The PH2815 for the 250's and 330's are carried on the shelf at Checker. The PB50's for these are becoming hard to locate as stated.

Gerry Argentina may be a bit far to travel for filters however if they were cheap enough I would consider having them shipped.

Sleeper, like Jim was saying my local NAPA wants to sale me there brand.

Rudy, who are you ording from?

Jim, thanks for the number update. I'm not sure we have Checkers Auto in Indiana.

Thanks

Baldwins can be ordered from Partsource and cheaper from others if you search this boards archive. They seem the best. Yale

Thanks Yale.

I would like to stay with fram for the original. However, if I can't find them I'll switch.

Hi William,

Baldwin are considered original (I believe).

Thanks Tom, I just assumed Fram was OEM. Seems like almost every Ferrari I've seen use the orange fram filters.

Gerry not sure of the price.

Thanks

Hi William,

Frams are more common because they are easier to obain, at least it used to be. Without getting into a heated debate on the quality of Frams, many people feel Baldwins are better and perhaps recommended by Ferrari. I also heard (not confirmed) that baldwins have a higher burst ratting than Frams which can save you on cold weather start up. Many times, however, it's not the filter that fails, but the gasket.

Personally, I have Frams on my car because the break-in period for my engine will only be a couple of thousand miles before I change the oil. I'll probably go with Baldwins at that point more because I like the red filter color over the orange ones of the Frams (it matches my paint :-) ). For that matter, if one changes their oil and filter every 3000 miles, what particulate matter will a better filter catch? What was filter technology like in the 60s? All things to consider.

Thanks Tom, I may end up ording the Balbwin filters if I cannot find the frams. I need to change the oil as I'm not sure when the last oil change was done.

Thanks
