Side Mirrors
Hi Kerry,
Don't get me wrong, I appreciate a passenger side mirror, but have found ones that are flat to have too narrow an angle of view to be of much use. I guess I've gotten used to modern cars with their convex mirrors.
It would be great to buy a passenger mirror and exchange the flat glass for a curved mirror.

The new Talbot mirrors can be ordered with convex mirrors.tyang wrote:Hi Kerry,

I think that Kerry was making reference to my 330 which had the
small Talbot mirror at the very front of the door pannel.
I never liked it for several reasons:
The field of view was too small.
You had to make an effort to look in the mirror.
The position is different from my modern cars that I have
become used to --- I like to just scan with my eyes from the
left mirror outside the cabin to the center mirror on the
windshield to a right mirror outside the cabin.
So I bought two mirrors that are just the same that Kerry has.
I removed the old small Talbot, and attached the new mirrors with
stainless sheetmetal screws in about the same places that the
mirror occupy on Kerry's car.
I had to have the holes for the screws that mounted the old mirror
welded up, the area filled, and sanded. It has yet to be painted.

Art,
About side view mirrors... one word of advice: FORGETABOUTIT, unless you can mount the it on the unpainted parts of the body.
Side view mirrors on early Ferrari road cars are like safety roll bars on the Ferrari vintage spyders. They are unpleasant appendices.
Remember what the wise man said: ... and now my friend, the first rule of Italian driving: what's-a behind you does-a-not matter.

William,
The side view mirror was one of the best driving safety ideas ever, but it doesn't work with the pre-Daytona cars.
As luck would have it, no one before me added side view mirrors to my cars. So, when I got them I found it very difficult to make left lane changes. Since then, I have installed s/v mirrors but not on the paintwork. Not so much because the paintwork is precious, but because the mirror itself, especially if it is as revolting as the Talbot, tilts the aesthetics altogether.

John,
The Talbot is already there and very tired looking. I tend to agree with you regarding the astetics but, as the damage is done, I am looking to put a fresh mirror where the present one sits - on the paintwork. That said, I am willing to mount any period appropriate mirror, not just a Talbot.

John,
Its tempting. I have two issues with that one:
1. Is it correct? This is the minor concern.
2. I already have holes drilled for the talbot (probobly done by Chinetti). Will I have to drill new holes or will the existing ones work.
The first question should be easy to answer, but I think I'll need to speak with the manufacturer to answer the second.

Art S.
PS. I suspect I will end up with as many mirrors as I have Marchal fog/spot lights (I think I have 5 or 6 of those 'in reserve' of all different styles).

From what I can tell from the picture, the eBay mirror is identical to what was on my car when I bought it in '82. I've also seen them on Daytonas, etc.
Someone made a repro of this style with thinner metal and had little Ferrari logos on the front (of the car) side. These were like the tie tacks you see on eBay. These would not be like originals and probably shouldn't be used.

William,
I don't know about a GTE.
BTW, there's another set on eBay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?Vi ... :B:SS:US:1
These must be being repro'ed in Germany.
Art S,
I'm sure that the holes won't match. Of more interest is whether the base will cover the Talbot holes and how does the paint look once the Talbot is removed as I think that the base is smaller than the Talbot base. So there would be some paint exposed that would not have weathered like the rest of the door. Perhaps Lowell Brown can comment since he just changed from a Talbot Jr. to this style. I know that he moved the location, but maybe he can remember the base differences.
