as promised I have returned and will update with some pictures of the car , the painter has the paint stripped from all the important areas now he will begin sandblasting the remaining materail away now that he knows there is very little filler hidden under the primer. I am actaully amazed at how little filler was on the body and that some of the original lead work was still in place and in great shape. While in Florida I had the chance to go buy and look at a Alloy Boano that Shaughnessy procured from Venezula and although it is in very rough shape it is still a very special car and in the right hands will be brought back from the grave and to her former glory. Pictures of the Boano and a good write up by Tom is posted on F-Chat http://www.ferrarichat.com/forum/showthread.php?t=99109

hi all,

the car proceeds along and most metal work is completed, I delivered the GTE to the media blaster this morning for some final stripping and than it will be imediatly epoxy primered to keep out any rust. We decided to replace all the floors and the trunk pan. You can see the patches in the lower fender areas where there was a little suface rust on the inside. Most of the factory lead work has been removed from the car to address any potential rust issues that lye underneath. Note how crude some of the factory metal work is in some areas and how much lead they used to basically form the A-pillars and door jams. We decided we had to leave the lead on the a-pillars since it actually forms the windscreen opeing and to try and make it out of either new metal or filler would be no better.

I was at the engine builders yesterday and things are moving forward.

I have been working on the smaller components and restoring what I can without the car here. I have also been busy preparing cars for the Southern California show season and working on the other 3 full restorations I currently have. I am proud to say that at the last FCA Concourse on Rodeo we took a Platinum & Gold on two 365 2+2s I prepaired and a silver on a red 330 GTC i just started correcting.

like you can see I have been quite busy but will continue to post updates on the GTE as progress continues and interesting things happen.

lot's of pictures but I think they are quite interesting, the amount of lead work and crude panel fitting is always neat to see with everything removed. The blaster had a heck of a time getting the black paint the previous shop put on the underside of the car and had the done a better job applyimg I ,ight have left it. We were also amazed to see how much filler work there was in the engine bay and other areas, clearly Ferrari did make an attempt to smooth things out and present a better looking engine compartment. last couple pictures show the first coat of Epoxy Primer going on the seal the bare metal and perpare it for the body work.

Man, can I relate to those pictures. Having put my cab through the exact same process I can appreciate how much work the pics represent, and how much more remains to be done. I thought the GTE looked really solid when I saw it during the disassembly, and it looks like the stripping has pretty much confirmed that it is in relatively good shape.

I was surprised on my car, too, to find that nearly all the complex areas on the body were mostly lead that was put there by Pininfarina. The other thing that stood out was the "apprentice-level" welds in the engine bay sheetmetal. We cleaned those up a little just to lessen the crudity factor, since I plan on having the hood open whenever the car's at an event.

Looks like the epoxy primer was sprayed inside an inflatable bubble, maybe?

here is the last set of rough body pictures, car is completely epoxy primed now and the final metal work and body work process will begin. We have tried several matches to the original Rosso Rubino and the color is proving a little difficult to match but we'll get it. If any of you GTE owners have good examples of original trunk and door gaskets or where I can get them, I am going to need two sets; one to set the gaps and one for final assembly.

Hi Zac, nice pictures! FWIW, I noticed Italparts sells a 250 trunk seal which might work - looks like the rectangular foam trunk lid type by the picture:

Zac - My car is in a state of disassembly such that I could easily help with the rubber samples. Let me know what you would like me to provide. Besides, I can benefit from your research, as I will need the rubber myself.

Why do you need two sets? Is the rubber destroyed during the setting of the gaps or just too smudged for concours? If you read between the lines here you may find the question "would the second set still be good enough for my car?"

Your prep work looks excellent. It makes me think that if a couple dozen of my real estate deals come through, I might quit this madness of thinking I can get this car running myself and send it your way. Of course, then what would I do with all my time???

Nice work Zac.

Is that gray stuff an etching type primer? I have used a PPG product before for a similar process. It was called DP90, I believe.

Jon,

I know of Italparts but I am a little leary of buying stuff like that from Europe without seeing samples first.

Tom,
I could use some pieces of original door seals, trunk and hood seal material. I know of the sources out there for replacement items but from my experience the stuff is usally close but not quite what it should be. Most of the door gaskets I see are to big and thick which makes the doors not close right. The seals used for body and panel fit usualy get primer and filler material on them and sometimes have to be cut out once the fitting process is completed, but you are welcome to go through my leftover bin.

if you decide to move your project on I would be happy to help, just know I don't come cheap and seeing as your parents own one of my favorite resturaunts in San Diego I can see plenty of free meals in my future:)

I believe Peter used a Sikkens product, it is more of a encapsulating epoxy primer and doesn't come cheap but is supposed to be the best stuff out there at the moment. We uncovered a couple rust issues that could not be seen until the car was blasted and want to try and stop some of the notorious GTE rust problems once and for all.

Hi Zac, I just wanted to be sure you were aware of it, never know what has just surfaced - I hadn't seen any of that in my searches till just now.

For the surface rust on the underside of my 330, I'm going down the traditional scrape, mediablast/sandblast, eastwood rust converter, then eastwood rust encapsulator (an epoxy enamel apparently). It won't be as fast as a bubble epoxy spray, buy I hope it lasts as long.

Those should be no problem Zac. I will get you samples. Mine are not good enough to hold water everywhere, but most of the areas will make fine samples.

Just kidding about farming out my car (back off Shaughnessy!). I am having too much fun trying to figure out this stuff myself. However, the offer for dinner or lunch at the family digs always stands. Maybe I will hand over the samples there.

See you in Monterey.

Zac - I'm going to try to get some time in on the car tomorrow and hopefully will be able to bring the samples of rubber to Monterey. How big a piece are you looking for?
