Where should I go in Italy

Post by Racerrad »

I'll be in Italy this fall (October). Any recommendations for must visits? Also, What is the best way to reserve a factory tour?

Thanks, Rad

The ONLY way to get a free factory tour is to reserve it through your Ferrari dealer.

The Ferrari Owner's site has special 2 day tours that you can purchase.

Rad,

I once lived in Europa for seven years. All I can tell you is that you have got to go to Lake Como! You'll thank me when you return. It is idyllic. Il Porticciolo Viaggi is the travel agency to use for accomodations at Lake Como. Check it out on the web.

I second the emotion regarding Lake Como - it's one of our favorite places. My wife and I stay in Cernobbio, just a stone's throw from Villa D'Este and love the place. Ride the Lake ferries - the traditional ones are called the Vaporetto and make stops at many of the small villages.

Tuscany and Umbria are great - we like The Siena/ Cortona/ Montalcino area and if you like wine, you may never decide to leave.

Liguria is great also - the Italian Riviera south of Genoa: Portofino and the Cinqueterra.

The Amalfi Coast south of Naples is also unique and boast probably the most kamikaze drivers per square foot of anywhere I've ever been.

Of course Maranello...goes without saying, right? If you're into the modern cars, do the factory tour by all means. But if you're into the vintage cars, the Galleria Ferrari is a must, and I'd also HIGHLY recommend having lunch (or dinner for that matter) at the Ristorante Cavallino across the street from the factory's main gate. The food's excellent, enjoy a bottle of Lambrusco and take your time. Luca de Montezemolo might walk past your table too.

Rad, how much time will you plan to be in Italy...that will define what and where and do you have any must see places you want to do? I can help provide some other advise. Depending when your here, you might be able to catch on of the mostra scambio's (which is a massive flea market for car stuff and motorcycle parts). I usually hit the big ones and find some ferrari stuff and the usual metric and european items on our cars not generally avail in the usa.

If you make it to Sicily, drive the three routes of the Targa Florio. We just got back yesterday, and it was a highlight of my trip.
