I just crunched the color numbers in the 330 GT registry again and here are the charts with original color vs. last known color:
From 265 cars where the original color is known and 630 for the last known ones. As you can see, lots of resale red.

330 colour
interesting chart.......well done!
As my 330 is currently bare metal........the Oxford Blue paint job was not the best....I was playing with the idea of two tone......however that idea is starting to fade.........you can all breatheasy now!
The original colour was Blu Sera Salchi 20100 M and will be gracing the car.....should I be able to match it.
Steve at AutoTec is doing the work.....call him if you could advise

Rosso Rubino - or other red.
Hi Owen
All colors, but especially red, are are notorious for looking totally differnt under varoius Lights. Then there is the problem of reproducing the color if photographed and saved it after it is manipulated by the camera, the film or the digital color profile, followed by displaying it with the color profile of the computer and monitor. If you print it, the ink and printer get involved.
Only by looking at a car under various conditions can you really know if you like it.
My 330 is Rosso Rubino - and it can appear any red between a dark red and a reddish orange (in some photos). It would probably look almost black under sodium vapor Lighting.
The only certainty - there seems to be no metallic component that I can see.
It is a much harder decision than - for example - choosing a bottle of wine.
Cheers

Salchi is/was an Italian paint manufacturer. Taken over by BASF in 1998.Art S. wrote:Kerry,

Mine is among the shrinking blue population.
Lee,
What is Salchi? Mine is Blu Sera Metalazo (evening blue metalic)

Celeste is a blue. The literal translation is sky blue. See http://www.parrotbyte.com/330GTRegistry ... re_093.jpg for an example.daffy wrote:Kerry

Ah no, AZZURRO CIELO is "sky blue." CELESTE is "Celestial blue."

Kerry's chart is nice but it seems there were huge amounts of color varitions in the blues and reds and even different possible golds and greens. So all those blocks of blue and red are not as monolitic as they seem.

Yes, I have a variety of colors mapped into 16 basic colors. Otherwise the pie charts would be hundreds of thin slivers.Yale wrote:Kerry's chart is nice but it seems there were huge amounts of color varitions in the blues and reds and even different possible golds and greens. From my Italian/English dictionary:
celeste 1. pale blue, sky-blue 2. celestial, heavenly
So we're both right.

Well, here's the thing, did you look up the Ferrari color called AZZURRO CIELO? That translates into "sky blue" so in a simpler world, not full of the vagaries of the Ferrari color palate one could have accepted Celeste blue, "celestial blue," to transmogrify into "sky blue." But since there is already a Ferrari color that is a more directly translated into "sky blue," Celeste blue should remain, "celestial blue" and that is such a nice sounding color anyway.

No I didn't look up azzurro cielo then. The problem with a foreign language dictionary is that they aren't good on multiple words or phrases.
But azzurro is blue or azure while ceilo is sky or heavens. Hence sky blue or heavenly blue.
I think that one really needs to know Italian to be to understand the subtles of the Ferrari color names. While I would love to learn Italian, my aptitude is not in foreign languages. In fact some might say that English is sometimes foreign to me.

Car should be done soon. I've been too busy to get to shop, but car was ready to paint about two weeks ago and painting and reassembly was to take a couple of weeks. Entire process will have taken almost exactly 12 months. I'll post pictures when I get it back, including some in bare metal stage.
I decided to go with Blue Sera. After my research, I had shop spray a few samples of period blues and this was my favorite. It will be metallic, but flakes/powder used will be very subtle vs. what's more common today. Blue Chiaro was my second choice. I plan to reupholster the interior in the original orangish tan leather and I think this will be a great color combo.
Everyone is right about how difficult it is to pick a color, and to even get a good idea of what the original colors look like. I gravitated towards blue early in process and must have dowloaded every photo available of 60s Ferraris. As noted in some of previous posts, at best you can only get an idea of a color from a sample of photos (since it will look different in just about every photo). Even pictures I took of cars I viewed in person look different from what I remembered seeing.
Best advice I got during this obsessive process was from someone I met with a restored Lusso and who had actually bought a new 330GT in 1964 (marrone, by the way)! He said "paint it any d*** color you want - only 1 in 10,000 people will know whether it's correct or not." Only problem is, we all know the 1 in 10,000!

Hi Owen,
I can't wait to see the pictures!
Digital cameras, especially amature models, have a hard time rendering red. Infared and UV affect CCD chips more than film cameras, so its another factor in getting the color right. The only way to look at paint is in person.
Another point in looking at color is samples should be sprayed on a curved piece of metal with the same type of primer that will be used on the car. With metalics, the flakes will react differently to light depending on the angle, and there is a certain amount of translucency(sp?) that allows primer to affect the surface paint.

Any color
I have yet to see a well done Ferrari color detract from the lines. I prefer darker colors you don't see everyday. Darker green and brown especially. Maroon is also a very handsome color.
Having had black cars, they do look nice, but are just plain stupid to keep looking very good. My car looks unacceptable after 2 days in the garage. Just from settling dust!
Pick YOUR color and do it because you like it. It'll look great as long as you don't pick one of the colors just don't belong on cars. Violet, pink, etc. Dodge was putting a very ugly violet on some of their cars around 2000. Must've found some of that AMC marijuana in the back of some warehouse in Wisconsin!
