PF Coupe and Cabriolet belly pans

Post by 330GT »

I just spent Sunday communing with 1747GT, verifying dimensions on its original belly pan. Combined with some drawings done by William Lester in the late 80s (thanks Parker), I now have an accurate engineering drawing:

Image

The next question will be if I make one for my car by hand or if enough people want them, I will to look into getting a small production run made. These will fit a series II PF coupe or cab. I don't know if they fit a series I or not. Since the earlier car has a different engine (inside plug) and the belly pan fits tight around the oil sump, it may not.

If you are interested in getting one of these, please send me a PM and I'll add you to the list. Once I know the level of interest, I will see about getting them made and find out what the cost would be. Shipping will also be an issue since they are about 6 1/2' long. I would have to crate them which will add to the cost.

Kerry,

Do you know the difference between a PF Coup and a series II GTE belly pan?

I know my car is missing its pan.

Thanks
William

I don't, but I'm sure it is a lot. The GT/E is based on a different chassis, so probably everything would be different.

Kerry,

Nice work! As you know I would be interested in one.

My (electric) fuel pump is on the right side and I beleive yours is on the left. But, does that make a difference in the design of the belly pan?

Here are a couple of pictures I found on the web of a pan for a Series II car.

Those pictures actually came from Michael Sheehan's website when he had 1969GT, PF Cabriolet for sale.

This project has been in the works a long time, starting with a promise from TomS that I could borrow a belly pan when I bought 1643 through him. That never happened due to various circumstances most out of his control.
A few weeks ago, there was an eBay auction for a 'PF coupe body parts' manual. I didn't win it, but the winner contacted me later to see if I wanted a copy. I got the copy and amongst the material were a bunch a drawings by William Lester done in the late 80s when he owned 1927GT, a PF coupe. The page for the belly pan was only the left side of an original 11x17 drawing. Whoever did the photo copy didn't do both sides or the RH page was lost.
In any case, the left side had the most complicated parts, namely the curved areas surrounding the sump. I also had the Sheehan picture that shows some of the rear part of the belly pan. By putting both together and doing some measurements on my car, I created the first engineering drawing with some assumptions.
I posted an article on my restoration site and later got an email from Parker Hall saying that he has some of Lester's material and would look for this drawing. A few days later, I got copies in the mail from Parker (many thanks to a fine Southern gentleman). In the meantime, I had contacted Ed Long, owner of 1747GT, also a PF coupe. Ed lives about 4 hours away from me, so not exactly next door. He took some pictures and measurements that jibed with Lester's complete drawing. So I revised mine to match. Then this last weekend, I had reason to be down in Oregon, so I drove the 330, spent the night and met with Ed the next morning.
Ed had put his car on jack stands, so it was possible to reach underneath it for more pictures, measurements and to remove the access door for the handbrake. That enabled me to measure it, mike the thicknesses of the materials and understand how that door bolted on.
When I got home, I revised the drawing yet again.
We're supposed to get a big screen TV delivered today, so I'll have a big piece of cardboard that I'll cut for a full-sized template. The PF coupe is on the lift so I'll be able to fit it into place and check the fit as much as possible w/o having an engine in place.

So far, there are 4 people (including me) interested. That's enough for me to do the legwork to talk to a local metal shop about getting a few made. Once I have a quote, I'll let those interested know the cost involved.

John, since your car is a series I, I'm not sure that this will fit. I asked Parker Hall (he as a series I PF cabriolet). He said that his belly pan does not fit have the wings that go around the sump. He doesn't know if it did originally and parts were cut off or it was made that way. If you want, I can mail you a 11x17 (1:5 scale) drawing and you can do some measuring on your car. If so, email me your address.

Hi Kerry,

My replica belly pan does have those wings that go around the sump. If you kindly send me the scaled-down template I can gauge it for myself and let you know. You do have my email, I think, but I will send it to you anyway. Thanks for all your efforts.

William - This is what a Series III GTE belly pan looks like. As you can see, it is quite different from Kerrys.

The GTE one looks very similar to a 330 GT one.

GTE belly pan

Post by kare »

Here's mine. Note that chassis number (3197) is written with red paint on both front corner AND air scoop (the latter almost completely worn off and can't be seen in the photo). As it was written on both parts, I assume the marking was made when belly pan was first fitted to bare chassis (easier that way) and number was added to make sure that the correct one could be retrieved when the car had returned from Pininfarina for final completion. It is also possible that the chassis number was added during factory overhaul in 1967 (but why mark both pieces then?). Anyone ever seen one like it?

Best wishes, Kare

Interesting! My pan is not painted and is the natural aluminum.

Kare, I have one that looks just like yours. It is painted black and came from #3547.

Similar in shape and color - or also including a s/n written in red paint...?

John just got back to me and confirmed that my drawing will fit his Series I coupe.

I have 3 or 4 people interested, so I'm going to get a quote on getting some made. Anybody else interested?
