Forget about riding the subway — MTA Chairman Peter Kalikow just got a customized, one-of-a-kind Ferrari to add to his collection.

The dark-blue Ferrari 612 Scaglietti, with a 540-horsepower V-12 engine under its custom-made hood, went on display last weekend at a Ferrari festival in Como, Italy, where fans of the high-performance car could see Kalikow's baby in person.

The car is big news among Ferrari fanatics, because it is one of the first that the car company has allowed to be modified by outside designers while still retaining the famed Ferrari name and its prancing-horse logo.

Kalikow reportedly ordered the car's body and interior changed to his specifications by a company called Pininfarina, which put a rising air scoop on the hood and extra chrome details on the grille.

There's no word on how much Kalikow paid, but without the modifications, the coupe runs a cool $260,000.

It's a world apart from the crowded subways and buses that New York's transit riders have to take for $2 a ride.

Kalikow, who has a chauffeur as part of his MTA post, is known in New York as a real estate magnate who emerged from bankruptcy in the early 1990s and was appointed to head the transit agency.

But in the rarefied world of exotic car collectors, Kalikow is renowned for the dozens of flashy Ferraris he keeps in a secret climate-controlled underground garage in a building he owns near MTA headquarters.

Ferrari buff Tom Yang took a tour in 2001 and posted pictures on his Web site, showing the gleaming cars, with trophy cases in the background.

"In this brightly lit garage lived some of the finest Ferraris in the world," Yang wrote. "Having one or two ... perfect cars would be an achievement, but this collection was awe inspiring!"
