SWB tank

How does one solder the tank, with the gas fumes and such? Would one solder a tank in place?

Hi Peter, years and years ago I repaired many tanks . First flush with water for a good long time and then fill the tank with water . Position the tank so the repair is the high point and go to work. The water displaces the fumes. Pehaps now they fill them with an inert gas first. Mike

Hi Mike: You jogged my memory, I do remember the water from many years back, but I also remember the explosions.

Hi Peter,

How bad is the leak? Is it at a seam? After you wash the the insides with water, make sure there is no water near the area that you are soldering or the water will act like a heat sink, and not let the area get hot enough for the solder to flow. A really big soldering iron will be safer, but a torch will give better heat penetration.

Peter,

I repaired a 250 swb tank on the car using POR 15 paste. Did this after removing the tank (first the axle/spring assembly) and having a profes. shop do the work. Still had a leak in the seam.

Just drain the tank, mark where repair is needed and apply in thin coats. Worked like a charm for me.

Don't get it on your hands.
