330 GT wheels

Post by 330GT »

Just when I think I know a bit about 330 GTs, I discover something new.

I always thought (actually assumed) that the change from the RW 3801 wire wheels (6.5x15") to RW 3812 (7x15") came with the introduction of the series II (single headlight) model at the same time that the alloy wheels were introduced.

However, I noticed that the build sheet for 7161 (originally a personal car of Enzo Ferrari) showed 3812 for the wheels. I first thought that this was a special (like the turquoise paint), but I went looking at other build sheets. The earliest one that I have that has 3812s is 6937, the last 4 speed/OD car. So it seems that the wider wheels were introduced about the same time as the interim model (4HL/5 speed).

The 3812s became a factory option with the alloy wheels being standard on the series II model.

So another useless tidbit unless you are a concours judge. I'll remember this until I die, but still can't find the screwdriver I just set down a few minutes ago.
Regards, Kerry
