Re: 365 GT 2 + 2 restoration

Post by A.D. »

Went and saw the Ferrari-it is still missing slightly.

Have narrowed it down to the center carb. Will get the needles valves etc opened and cleaned tomm.

In the meanwhile have been trying to get the various meters gauges etc working- In the tach dial there is a red light (towards the bottom right) which remains on even when the engine is running. What is this light for?

I would have thought its the light to show that the ignition is on-but it doesnt go off when the engine comes on.

Any thoughts?

Hi A.D.

That light may be part of your problem. If your car is left hand drive, reach down under the dash to the right if the steering column. You will find a lever. It may be concealed under the leather trim panel that covers the underside of the steering column.

That lever is the choke or "starter" as Ferrari called it. You need to push it toward it's stop and the light will go out. If the choke is connected it will enrichen the mixture and reduce the amount of air to the carbs.

Good luck.

Hi Mark,

Thanks for letting me know what the red light is for.

Unfortunately, that is not the cause of the problem as we have not connected the choke yet.

Today we have removed the centre carb (the one which was giving us the problem) and taken it apart to clean it thoroughly.

Will reassemble and refit it after cleaning and hope that the problem goes away..........

Hi A.D.

Too bad, but at least you got the light to go out.. Perhaps you might try leaning out the center carb a bit. Just a thought.

An update:

Finally! The car has been taken out on the road. :D

I was not present but the mechanic tells me that she runs smoothly.

There is still a bit of hesitation upon revving the engine from idle. :( (Any suggestions?)

Will track this down, but-The mufflers and pipes have a lot of leaks-he advises me that we should attend to this in order to get a good tune up. I am proceeding to get this done.

Additionally the rear end of the car seems to be very low.

I know that this car came with a hydraulic self levelling suspension. Any thoughts on what i should look for?

Congratulations !

P.S. IMO, pictures prove that Your car is in REAL condition (and not something perhaps too superficial for the road ?). Beautiful !!!

Hey A.D. that is fantastic, cool and surreal. When I was in India in the 90's there were a few Indian made cars that were higher level then the Hindustans you would always see. I at times would meet with the head of Warner Bros in India and he had an Indian made GT that was very cool and I do remember seeing a couple of brightly colored fiberglass roadsters in a gas station. However these sightings were so rare. The thought of seeing a Ferrari or a Shelby during that time was beyond possibility. Of course it's not like I saw them in NYC either unless I went to a place that sold them. So to see yours in a a gas station is just so wonderful. Congratulations, amazing!

Merry Christmas!

The Ferrari is undergoing rear suspension work after which it will get a new set of mufflers and pipes.

Am also having the meters serviced. Have run into a problem-am enclosing some photographs-this is the gear housing for the Tachometer. There are no gears in it!

I can get these fabricated but am not sure i will get the ratios correct.

Do you where i could obtain a set of gears for this?

Or any ideas on how i could attend to this issue?

these angledrives are very difficult to find and often broken ,specialy for those who works with a speedpilot and trip masters.
But Roelofsparts.com in the NL sells newly made ones. price unknown
Mr Dennis Mc Cann sells them also for only ............995 USD.
some fotos of how it should look like
These are 250gt parts but 330gt is probebly the same
Kerry can conform

Thank you 250 GT, i have PM'd you for your help.

The rear suspension has been overhauled-This took some time as i had to wait for some more parts from T Rutlands. These finally arrived and were fitted.

The car was then given for an entire new muffler system, pipes, mufflers et all.

After this, we thought we can now "finally" set the carbs.

At that moment the starter motor packed up (Again)

Checked the price of a new (as in reconditioned) starter, and after hearing the price decided to get the existing starter rewound.

This has been done, seems to be working fine, so now the attention has been turned back to "finally" setting the carbs.

Have now run into a problem.

I will try my best to describe it below:

The centre carb feeds four cylinders.

At idle two of these cylinders are missing (both are on the same side).

Upon revving to a fast rpm everything works fine.

If the carbs are switched around, the problem gets transferred to another set of cylinders.

My mechanic has explained to me that the reason it works fine upon revving and not on idle is that there are two sets of throttle plates-primary (used for idling) and secondary (used during higher rpm)

Tried cleaning the parts accessible from the outside. (remember these carbs were rebuilt by Mike Pierce so i am reluctant to open them up completely). We can, ofcourse, send the offending carb back to Mike to look at, but he is a looooong way away, and that would take a couple of months, at least.

However we seem to be running out of ideas and options.

Can anyone please suggest what we should be doing or looking at?

Thank you

Best
