A.D.

Orther possibility could be an broken valve spring.
take off valve cover on not working side.
and let engine run WITHOUT this valve cover ,clean victim springs before as much as possible.
only a few drops will spoil, believe me
always FIRST check the simple things.
nice eastern.

Thank you for all the input.

The heads are off-two valves were not sealing properly so have ordered a new set (all 12 cylinders)of OE valves from T Rutlands.

Will recv them around 25 April.

Then lets see............

The valves have been changed.

The heads were refitted on the car and so were the carbs.

Was not able to set the carbs correctly

One carb is working ok but the other two are not.

By switching the carbs around the problem was getting transferred to the other cylinders.

The carbs have been therefore taken off the engine and sent back to Mike Pierce at Pierce manifolds.

Awaiting his report. Will keep you posted.

Hi A.D.,

Did you check the most obvious checks like a stuck float or clogged idle jet? Although you probably already sent your carbs back, these two things are pretty easy to check before you do something drastic like pulling the carbs off and sending them thousands of miles away for repair.

Garantee rules don't accept self control I think.
A.D did the right thing IMO
even when this take a month.
I would expect quality too, when a well know company did the work.

Does this mean that owning a Ferrari requires a lack of self control? Reminds me of the old Warren Zevon song: "excitable boy". I wonder if Warren ever owned a Ferrari?

Cornelis:

I like your English, it's better than my German. Anyway, I get it. All is not what it seems with women and Ferraris!

Cheers

Sorry A.D. This digression is probably not helping you. I seem to remember way back, that you had some contaminated fuel in your car. As I recall this fuel may have gone through the newly rebuilt carbs when you first ran the engine. This my friend, may have something to do with your problem.
Mike Pierce will find out soon enough.

Hi

The carbs were sent to mike pierce who said that they were twisted, and probably not fixable. Have managed to acquire a set that he had restored for another customer which are now on the way to India.
Will get these, put them on and report back.
Fingers crossed!

Hi Tom

Have recd the carbs from Mike Pierce.

In case we screwed up last time-i do not want to make the same mistake twice.

Therefore:

While fitting the carbs back onto the engine what should i torque them to?

Best

Hi A.D.

When I inatalled the carbs on my engine, I used a standard end wrench (spanner) and tightend the nuts, with new wave washers until the washers were flat. Mike Pierce advised me on this procedure. I also used a thin layer of Hylomar on the gasket surfaces.

A.D.,
since it is somewhat difficult to gauge exact torque spec on carb mounting, I've always used following as a "rule of thumb" : With a very light and even effort, turn in each nut down until it becomes lightly "snug" and once this is achieved on all of them, then tighten each evenly another 1/8 turn(or so) , but no more than 1/4 turn each. You should also try to contact Pierce Man. for their recommendation. Also, make sure Your intake mounting surface or heat insulators between intake manifolds and carbs (if present, usually made of some kind of fiber or plastic composite ?), are not "warped/twisted". Latter, if required, might have been supplied to You new from Pierce as part of service (?) and if not, You might try to obtain them before mounting, as the "new" carbs will most likely warp if You use old ones.

Decided against fitting the new carbs back on at this time as anyway the car is undriveable in the condition it is in now.
Instead, have sent the car off for a complete body and cosmetic restoration today.
This should take at least six months and a lot of input from all of you on rubber parts gaskets etc etc.
Will keep you posted.
