My car is has Girling calipers. indicated by a large "G" on the exposed side. Regardless, there are a lot of folks that can offer rebuild service, including new stainless steel pistons. Send them to Tom, with his consent of course, he has the resources.

Cheers

Hi AD,

The original pistons on these calipers were steel with a industrial chrome plating on them which has rusted around the seal. When they get a light mark on them, you can sometimes polish them and reuse them, but for the cost and trouble of taking them out again, I would just buy new stainless steel pistons and seals.

If the caliper bodies are clean, and not too rusty, they're not too hard to rebuild with new seals. get a tool with a small hook, and pull the rubber seal out of the groove inside the caliper body. Clean them out well and insert a new seal. Attach a new dust seal on the piston, and carefully push each piston back in place by hand using assembly lube or brake fluid on the rubber parts to keep from cutting the seals. Do that a dozen times, and you should be good to go!

NGK B6ES
Some people use the extended tip BP6ES without issues, but you may want to go with

NGK B6ES to avoid problems.

I am having a little problem in setting the timing.

This is the timing procedure followed before
starting the engine.

First rotated the engine and took cylinder nr 1 to
TDC - Top Dead Centre.

As per this position set the right bank distributor rotor to face number 1 wire .

The flywheel TD marking also lined up properly

Next repeated the process with cylinder number 7 .

Again the flywheel mark lined up properly

Started the engine and checked with a timing light

Cylinder number one TD mark lined up and upon slight adjustment of the distributor the 10° mark lined up . Fixed the distributor at this .

However when the process was repeated with cylinder number 7 ,the TD mark of cylinder number 1 is showing up

Why is this happening ?

How do I get the cylinder number 7 mark to show up ?

The car idles a little rough and is running fuel rich , although start up is good and she starts in half a crank .

How do I set the timing accurately ?

As after this I am sure there will be an
improvement in the idling

A little help required from all my guru's out there

Please

Hi AD,

Setting timing to TDC will make your timing retarded. You need to set the breaker point gap to open on AF10. You had just enough adjustment in the slots of the distributor on the 1/6 bank to make AF 10, but were not so lucky with the 7/12 bank. There is an adjustment on the foot of the distributor where it meets the bakalite spacer. loosen the 10 mm nuts and see if there is enough adjustment to get AF 10 on the 7/12 bank. If not, you may have to pull the angle drive out and re-index the distributor by one tooth on the splined shaft.

Does this make sense?

if I understand, you say that when cylinder #7 is at TDC that PM 1/6 is showing up? If this is correct then your timing for that bank would be off 60 degrees!

If you are confident you have the right bank 1/6 timed correctly to AF 10, all you need to do to check 1/7 is rotate the engine to TDC PM 1/6, with the rotor pointing to cylinder 1 , to use as a starting point, then rotate the engine about 50 degrees until AF 10 for pm 7/12 shows up, this position should have the rotor pointing at cylinder 7, and the points just starting to open.

If the timing is off a lot and you have run out of slot adjustment on the distributer body, you can move the drive dog as Tom suggested. Do you know how to static time with a light bulb or test lamp? For me it's the easiest way to do the initial timing when things have been disturbed or if engine is not running. If you get a good feel for it you can time the engine almost perfectly for idle and first start-up, but I always use a strobe light to confirm and check high rpm advance.

I was intimidated when I first started working on my engine until I quickly realized it is really two 6 cylinder engines that use a common fly wheel and crankshaft, with a set of flywheel marks for each 6 cylinder engine

I know what I'm thinking, but may have expressed it wrong, so others can correct at will.

Thank you guys. You are truly magicians!

Followed the instructions and the timing magically
got set within 5 minutes.

She is still running fuel rich so now turning attention
to setting the carbs.

Any suggestions on how to solve this?
