How many turns out are the idle screws set at, and I would ask the same question, what is showing it's running rich?

I started with the idle screws at about 1.5 turns out from fully closed.

After 10 min of idling the centre and first carbs start a mini misfire where they actually spit out drops of fuel

A pfff happens and you can see some drops of fuel being thrown up from carb

You can't stand behind the car after 5 mins of starting . Eyes water . Fuel rich Smell.

The throttle screw is 3/4 turned after throttle opens and air screw is 1.5 turns open from full closed.

Before blaming the carburators have you done all the preliminaries such as valve adjustment, plugs, wires, points, timing? Your problem maybe electrical. Spitting popping carbs is usually not from rich mixture. If you are smelling fuel at tail pipe, it could also mean some dead cylinders are just pumping unburned fuel out the tail pipe.

I agree. Make sure all four points are firing consistently. If you have points or plugs fouling you can have un-burnt fuel dumping in the exhaust system. A sign of this is detonation (like back firing) inside the exhaust system. Do you have this symptom when you blip the throttle? Spiting outward thru the carbs typically mean a lean mixture.

Hi A.D. Listen to what all these wise men have said.90% of carb problems are spark related.Remember you have multiple sets of points .You say it fires up well so most of it is working but these cars can run surprisingly well on 9 cylinders so make sure one system is fully up to snuff prior to going on to system #2 and fussing with all the little carb screws. The vin plates on my car have vanished over the years.

I will get a new one but.....

The reason i am seeking this clarification is because in photographs i have noticed two positions

One on the inner wheel fender

One on the door

Pictures enclosed

Could some kindly soul let me know which is correct?

Or are there two?

Took wuite a while to organise the parts

Ship them to India and install

Have changed the

1.spark plugs

2.wires

3.distributor caps.

It has made no difference -

The engine is still running extremely very rich

One cannot stand behind the car at all with the

Smell and your eyes start to water.

Now dont know what to do.

Hi A.D. I am not that familiar with the carbs on your car but you should check that the "choke" is not on or stuck.Is the cable hooked up and are all the levers in the proper position?Webers dont have choke plates as other carbs do.They have circuits to supply more fuel if needed.If it is warm where you are you will not need them.In the cool Northeast I have no need for them.Just a few pumps of the throttle.Also make sure none of the float needles are stuck and the floats are set properly.Good luck,Mike

The car has 3 NOS webers 40 DFI 5 which Mike Pierce
Very kindly arranged for me. Have checked the synchronisation with a syn chronometer and they seem fine. The car doesnt have a choke and no external lonkages to any circuit can be seen.

We are now going to
1.Change the coils.
2. Put on the air cleaner.
3.Retorque the heads as per specifications.
4.Check valve lash against specifications as the problem seems to be in the left bank and left exhaust as seen from the front of the car. Specifically suspicous about cylinders 3 and 4.
5.Check timing at 3000 rpm (as suggested by the person who rebuilt the engine)

If she still smokes and fuel rich

a. Disconnect Nr 3 & 4 cylinders and see what happens.

B. If confirmed its these two cylinders only do a leak down test on all cylinders.

Any suggestions input and or guidance will be deeply valued.

Hi AD,

Get a spark tester or a timing light, and confirm all the spark plugs are firing on the left bank. Check each plug wire and see if the wire triggers the timing light, or spark checker when the engine is running.
