Hi A.D.,

You basically have the same brake master cylinder and booster. Your booster looks painted black and the originals are gold cadmium plated. The booster is a Bonaldi unit manufactured by Bonaldi, but licensed through Bendix. The brake master cylinder is probably a dunlop unit with a 1 inch bore.

When we turn the air screw there is hardly any

What could be the fault?

Hi A.D.,

Let's review. Have these carburetors been rebuilt? Do you know if you're running stock jets? Before you chase down carburetors, are you sure your ignition is set properly and it's firing on all cylinders?

Hi Tom.

If you recall i sent my set of carbs to Mike Pierce
Who did an outstanding job of rebuilding them.
When we started the engine we had a miss so we removed the carbs and sent them back to Mike for checking
them out again. In the meantime gave the car for painting.

Two things happened

1.The guy who painted the car left it out in the rain and water went into the cylinders, the rings rusted and we had to open the engine for a rebuild again.

2.Mike reverted and said that the catbs were no longer repairable and sourced another set which had been rebuilt by him but never used.

So after the second rebuild of the engine the
“New” as in another rebuilt set of carbs were fitted

The problem however remains the same

She runs fuel rich and starts missing after a while

We checked the fittings of the manifold and found
One, nearest to the firewall loose. So had it refitted
And tightened. Changed the O rings in the process

Also changed the bakelite etc packings from carb to
Manifold for all three carbs.

This was done over the last weekend.

There was no change. Car runs fuel rich and starts
Missing after a while.

Jet size I don't know .

Ignition seems ok , all cylinders firing .

We are checking the timing once again tomorrow.

What should we do?

Best

Hi A.D.,

How many turns out are the idle screws? Even if they're turned out too much, it shouldn't run as rich as you're describing! I would assume Mike Pierce checked all the jets to be correctly sized and corrected anything that was wrong. Are you sure the floats aren't stuck open and dumping fuel down the carbs? When the engine is running, take a look down the carbs and look for dripping fuel. I'm assuming when you say the car is running fuel rich, you're seeing it on the spark plugs when they come out black?

Thank you Tom

An update

Removed the carbs and opened them.
Changed the packing in between the top half
And bottom half of the carbs
Checked valves etc were clean
Assembled back together

Changed packing in between the carb and manifolds
Used thicker bakelite. Also changed the o rings between engine and Manifold

Car now running much better
Still missing but its hugely improved

Checked timing both banks
Timing seemed ok but on the
right bank a few of the spark plug
Wires dont seem to be passing a current

That is when the timing gun is attached to the wires
On three wires the strobe doesnt light up

Tomorrow will check the wires and change them if
necessary

After rebuilding the engine had put news distributor caps
and rotors. Could it be that the rotor is not
touching the contact point For some cylinders
Inside the distributor caps?

How do i check this?

If we are able to resolve this the next step is
to rebuild booster (Kit has arrived) and then -
Take her out on the road!!
Am so excited its been such a long journey
to reach this point!

AD, to see if your rotors/caps work as they should, you can remove the plug boots and gap them to ground, then spin the motor with the starter and see if the boots spark according to the firing order.

Hi A.D., you could put the cap ends of the a known good wire in the spot off the cap that is not firing.Make sure to switch the plug end as well. If the strobe lights up the wire is at least OK.A test meter should also be able to show if any individual wire has continuity or too much resistance.Taking the cap off to scrape the contacts clean is easy.Sounds like you are close ,we are all rooting for you.Remember 90% of "carb" trouble is the fault of ignition.
