Others will certainly respond with additional sources.

I know T Rutlands now sells them as NEW. I put a pair on my 365 just before selling it. It resolved a lot of issues I was having with my old ones.

Thats very helpful thank you.
Have spoken to Rutlands and they ate going to revert to me with a quote.

I am in the process of restoring the dash.

Would some kind souls please post images of the dash in their queens, and if they have pictures with the dash removed, it would be very useful.

Specifically what i am looking for is the exact tone of varnish of the wood dash, the fusebox, what are the various "holes" in the firewall used for etc etc.

A lot to ask i know, but need your support.....

I believe the varnish on the dash is very light in application, and is a dull semigloss finish, with almost a flat mat finish because it's so thin. As the original dashes age, the grain of the wood shows through the varnish. I spent a lot of time at Cavallino this week looking at how the dashes were finished and restored, and it runs a wide spectrum, but looking at original dashes, this is what I've concluded. Copying this finish has not been easy because you kind of have to do a "crappy" job!

Thank you Tom.

Does anyone know if Rutlands has continued to be
In business after the sad passing of Ted?

Mails to them are bouncing back.....

Hi AD,

As far as I know it's business as usual, but I don't do regular business with them. I did however, receive a email Christmas card from them, so they're still around!

Hello

I need new coils and ballast for the car in order to start the engine again. I thought while i am at i may as well also swap the points for the pertronix set up.

I remember having read that someone had used pertronix and had spoken to a person there

However I am unable to find the relevant post

Would some kindly soul please give me a name
And tel nr of the person at pertronix who is familiar with the set up required for the queen mother?

Thank you

I have a Pertronix system. They have no idea there really about usage in our cars. And it will take some fiddling to get it all to work. It is not plug and play. Tom curses me every time he has to deal with mine, and is always trying to get me to tale it out. It does make a difference and will make more power and I am happy I did it, but then I didn't have to figure out how to get it to fit and I don't have to work on it.

Thanks for the reply Yale. The background is as follows.

If you recall i had done a complete rebuild of the engine
And then sent the car for paint. While at the paint shop the car seemed to have been left out in the rain and when i got it back the engine had seized again. That required another round of opening engine changing rings gaskets.
Now finally ready to restart the engine and i am told that current is not flowing from the coil because the ballast resistor has failed. Which is why we thought we would switch to the petronix set up. Any ideas how i could address this? This seems to be the last hurdle before i can restart the engine. Please help.........

Hi AD,

I know you're in India, but you can install an internally ballast resistor Napa autoparts in the states sells: IC14SB
If you want to keep you stock Marelli coils, you can buy any automotive resistor to get the car started. Napa part:
https://www.napaonline.com/en/p/MPEICR11SB

These are pretty common parts that can be had at an autoparts store. If you want original stock parts, that's a different story.

I don't recommend going to electronic ignition. A LOT of money is made selling these units to people who don't really drive their cars to take advantage of the benefits. I do not doubt the advantages, but the simplicity of a points ignition system will be far easier to troubleshoot, maintain, and set up than wiring in an electronic system. Points ignition systems, when set up properly, will last a few thousand miles between cleanings and checking. Even a regular service interval of 8,000 miles, it will usually take years to have to look inside the distributor cap for most of us.

I agree with Yale, it does feel like the electronic ignition changes the car, but I would think there are other factors in play. Most common difference people feel is the way the car starts better. Well, Ferrari starters are notoriously power hungry, and as they older, this demand for current gets higher. Pull too much voltage from a weak battery, and you rob power from the points that fire the coils. MSD requires wiring the boxes directly from a power source, so they have a better chance of lighting off the coils. This can help fire off a V-12 engine better, but if the rest of the system is weak, a points ignition system will suffer, and even a MSD system. First gen Pertronix was very voltage sensitive, and they seemed to have fixed those issues with the 2nd gen units, but all of these units are "black box" units. They work, or they don't. When one stops working, you swap it out for another one. And trust me, they fail.

If you familiarize yourself with how a points system works, you will almost always get yourself home. Ferrari designed these cars to limp home from the back side of the Le Mans race circuit, why would we want to rely on modern electronics?

If you want an absolute recommendation that will help your old Ferrari start, spend the money on a modern starter, but I think electronic ignition is better in my 250K mile Honda!
