Jimmy,

Upload photos of the Abarth, please. They are such wonderful cars especially with Zagato coach work.

Cheers!

Greetings... Primitive? You've got a roof, side windows, and seats. I have 2 Morgans. I sit on a pillow resting on a piece of plywood (and love every minute of it)

Jimmy,

Nice photographs of the Abarth double bubble. You have done a very nice restoration. Yes they are primitive but so much fun to drive. Who makes the wheels? Are they 12” diameter?

Yale reported my wife and I had driven an Abarth 500 across the country some years ago. Actually, it was a Simca Abarth 1000. We took a camping trip to see the USA and lived out of it for 5 months. We put over 12,000 miles on it. I had to rejet the carbs above 6,000 feet, but other than that and 2 oil changes it needed nothing.

In addition to having designed some light weight bodies for Ferraris, there is another interesting “link” between Abarth and Ferrari. Gioacchino Colombo, who designed the later Ferrari engines, also designed the twin cam head for the Abarth 600 engine. He was a very creative engineer. He needed to avoid the rear most engine mount and cleverly routed the timing chain around it.

I still have an Abarth. It’s part of the family, and I find it as exciting a car to look at and drive as any of the Ferraris.

Jim, thank you for sharing. My thoughts are mutual. The only difference may be that I do not have your courage to challenge long trips with mine. She is too temperamental on occasions, but what a FUN car she is! So, yours is Simca 1000 ? That is splendid. At the time, I considered other models too, but they were either unavailable or too expensive then.

I presume yours is much more original than mine, which have been modified much by the previous owner as you can see in the pics.
Nevertheless, she is a darling to behold and although I do not drive her very as often as I wish, I still treasure this tiny, spunky, noisy, and smelly Abarth.

If you have pics to share, that would be delightful. Thanx again Jim for sharing your experiences.

Hi Jimmy.

This is the Abarth, a 1959 Record Monza twin cam. Raced by Team Roosevelt at 1959 Sebring. Came in 3rd in class. It started life as a 750cc and was later bored out to 1 liter. The interior was redone in hot rod style which will eventually be changed to its original configuration.

When purchased, it had Campy (magnesium) disc brakes in front. I had never heard of this but was told they were a aftermaket product and that Campy even made disc brake kits for drum brake Ferraris. I thought Campy only made bicycle products!!

The was the subject of a road test in the September 1959 Sports Car Illustrated shortly after it was sold by Team Roosevelt. Amazing car but it has litle power under 5,000 RPM. My big fear is someone driving a huge SUV on a cell phone coming up behind me before I get up to speed. Sardine in a can!

Jim, just lovely ! That must be one fast, spunky and light footed Abarth !

And one would have thought that Abarth only made mufflers. You must be one helpless gear head who understands what Abarth is all about. As for me, I was simply drawn into this from the looks.

Even with my modest double bubble, driving around town is quite an experience as you are well aware. This Abarth looks like a midget next to a Prius or even smaller cars that run around here.

Since mine is short gear ratio set up, it is suited for uphill climbs but cruising tollway north of 100kph is a bit of a struggle. The brakes have been changed to discs from drums.
