Unique Ferrari Hardware needed

Post by Tom Wilson »

This subject has been discussed a long time ago, but I am hoping someone might have a new idea or source for some of the unique fasteners used on the GTE. Primarily, I need the screws that hold on the "strike plate" (if that is the right word), where the door latch connects to the body.

<a href="http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m290 ... -Large.jpg" class="postlink"><img src="http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m290 ... -Small.jpg" border="6"></a>
(click on the photo to enlarge)

It has a 12.5 mm long 6mm screw with a 1mm pitch. The hard part is the 13.75mm philips head with the bevel designed to fit the hole in the strike plate. I am currently using a round headed screw, which tends to slip as the head is not wide enough and is unsightly.

<a href="http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m290 ... -Large.jpg" class="postlink"><img src="http://i107.photobucket.com/albums/m290 ... -Small.jpg" border="6"></a>

Any ideas on how to get these and other unique fasteners (like the screws for the window pads, the aluminum on the body under the door and the door latch)?

The same latch is used on my fiat, and probably others of that time period.

I might have some of those screws on my parts car- I don't have that car here, but can check it next time I have a chance. They'd almost certainly need to be re-plated, though.

The fiat part number for the door latch screw is 906638.

Unfortunately, the fiat 1500 isn't particularly common either. The chances of anyone stocking a part that only fits it are pretty slim. If you're lucky, something similar was used on a fiat 124 or other later model. For those, parts are plentiful. It might be worth calling a fiat parts company. I'd recommend http://www.funimported.com/ - (860) 871-1990, simply because I know the owner.

The other option is to see how close you can get with stock hardware.. I generally have had good luck finding hardware at mcmaster-carr. The closest I can find there for your situation is a combination of this screw:

and a tapered lock washer, like their part#90069A125.

Hi Tom,

It's not a hard one to find, almost any hardware place has them. The next time you in San Diego go to Abbaba bolt and they have them in stainless which can be polished to look like chrome. Only problem I have is that the head diameter is just slightly smaller and the edge radius is less sharp than the originals but will easily pass. On some of the later cars they use allen head bolts instead of phillips which I have purchased as well

Thanks guys. I guess I will have to find better hardware stores in Los Angeles! If not, I will be in San Diego in two weeks and will try there.

The latch is also an Alfa part; try Metric and Multistandard's web site for the screws. I think the minimum is $20.00, so I suggest you browse their 800 or so page catelogue until you come up with the minimum order amount, assuming you find what you want.

I have tried McMaster and Metric & Multistandard in the past to no avail. I will try the San Diego guy (which is spelled ABABA, by the way) and see how they do. Given the cheapness of the part and the log drive to San Diego, I will probably pick up a few extra in case anybody else need them.

Don't worry, no points off for spelling or grammar! I had to do a couple of Googles to find it under the first spelling, so I thought I would correct the record for anyone trying to find it themselves.

You can get perfect matches though in stainless at any Ace Hardware for about 25 cents each

These flat head phillips metric machine screws are special with a slightly larger head than the ones available from the hardware store like Zac said.

The ones for my 330 doors were an exact match to my scale which may vary from that of Zac's eagle eye! (though in stainless vice clad)

Hi Tom,

This might be usefull, but then again maybee not. There is a hardware store on 190th st down near redondo beach which is not too -to far from Culver City. I don't recall the name, but I know exactly where it is. If you look up the address of Steve Tillack's shop, the lane he is on T-bones into 190th and the hardware store is a little one on the same side of the street only a couple doors to the east. I have bought most of the stainless hardware for the GTE from these guy's and it's exact in most cases or close as Zac has mentioned in others. Small section at the back of the store. While you are there - stop and see Tillack's shop. Always something amazing going on in there and Steve himself was alway's accomodating to me. Another small trivea, the autoparts store on the opposite side of the street - again a little more east, has the correct oil filters for the 250/330 series including the bypass filter. The orange ones, I forget the brand at the moment. Why - I dunno, but I always leave for home with 1 or 2 sets stashed in the bag. My wife is used to the phrase "Look honey, I went to America and got you oil filters" - works every time.

Hope this helps.

Regards,

Andrew.

Cool! That sounds like a lot more fun than Ace. Only on this site can I get a referral from Australia for a hardware store down the street from my house!

Yeah - I guess that it does seem strange that a guy in a coastal Australian town would know about a hardware store in the industrial area of Redondo. The backend to the story is that we lived in Manhattan beach for 10 years before going to back to Australia so I got to know all sorts of nooks and crannies in LA where obscure Auto guy's would hang out.
