Car Cover

Post by fest »

having recently taken the plunge into ferrariship
naturally, I wanted to cover my asset

in shopping for a car cover
this is what I uncovered (pun)

I got a car cover with my Lotus Esprit
I was very impressed with the fit
and so made a mental note of the purveyor:
BHMA (Beverly Hills Motor Accesories)

I was NOT impressed with the dust
that infiltrated the cover, however
(more on that later)
on a black car it was quite ugly

upon investigation
it became evident
that BHMA does NOT make the cover
they are merely a distributor
(as is the case with most 'car cover' places, I found out)
the major manufacturer is COVERCRAFT
but
they do not 'do' retail sales, apparently
(more on that as well to follow)

I selected California Car Cover
as my retailer
mainly because they had the best website
and the most extensive listing of covers (patterns) available
and could give a quote (based on fabric selection)
immediately (vs submitting and waiting for email reply)

the closest listing they had to my car
(1980 400i)
was a cover for 1985-1989 400i and 412
as the only major difference is the mirrors
(and the deck lid height)
I figured it was worth a shot

the next step was selecting fabric:
I chose Dustop because it would be used indoors
and as stated, I wanted a cover that would
resist infiltration of fine dust particles
(particularly annoying with a dark car)

the price was liveable (under $200)
and it was delivered somewhat expediantly
(about 2 weeks, a couple days after I got the car)

the fit is excellent
other than the fact that the mirrors did not fit quite right
(a known factor going in)
and the trunk was a little baggy
(again a given)
and dust protection seems good

If I were to 'do it all again'
I may have proceeded a little differently:
Covercraft does offer a listing on their website
to look up all available patterns by number
one can then go to any retailer of car covers
with this pattern number
and get a quote
and thusly search for the cheapest cover
(JC Whitney might be a good bet)

as for fabrics, I have a friend in the Northeast
who swears by his NOAH Covercraft Cover
He has had occasion to leave his car outside
and contends the cover leaves his car 'show ready'
even after extended outdoor stays

Covercraft DOES offer some covers on their site
closeouts, discontinued, etc
so it is worth a look
they did have a (discontinued) 76-79 400 cover listed, in fact
but as it was in Sunbrella (OUTDOOR)
and expensive ($ over 200)
I decided to pass

Cal Car Cover . . .

Post by bill rose »

I've had several of their covers over the years . . . for my BMW 2002 and 3.0CSi, and now my 365GT2+2. All fit really well, and definitely protected the cars. Like you, fest, I selected the dust-top for indoor use, for my Ferrari. The others cars were keep outdoors, and I used heavier covers on them. I would certainly recommend this companies products.
