Voltage Regulator

Post by John Vardanian »

Has anyone tried to replace the guts of the red plastic box with a solid state regulator? Thanks.

Hi John,

Since no one has answered, I'll give it a shot.

I know there are shops that offer this service, but I don't know of any personal experience. It can't be that difficult, as long as the right voltage regulator is installed. From what I can understand, an external voltage regualtor is simply a switch that turns on the alternator/generator when it senses low voltage from the battery. I'm trying to find an electrical expert to figure out which is the right regulator.

Thanks Tom. I know it's done pretty routinely. I wondered about a particular s/s regulator that makes the conversion easier.

The regulator is a solid state design, but an old one. Bill Young at GT Parts in Phoenix carries origional rebuilt and updated regulators in stock. JimmyR

One thing to note is that the first photo shows the new regulator mounted on top of the original diodes, this caused a short.

The new regulator must be insulated from the diodes. I ended up removing the diodes or cutting the leads to them and anything else that the back of the regulator was touching.

Thanks Brian. So, TRANSPO model IS219 would be the right one for the 275.

Just one question... can I get it over the counter somewhere in Berkeley/Oakland, or should I try and get it off the net? Thanks again.

The regulator is a Transpo IS219.
Go to the Transpo website http://www.transpo-usa.com/distr_us.html
for a list of distributors.
