valve adjustment screws

Post by Dan Sands »

Can I get some opinions on the use of ball end valve adjustment screws? Should I replace them with the stock type? The engine has not been run with them yet, they were purchased many years ago.
Thanks, Dan

Hi Dan,

There are varying opinions on the benefits of this modification. If done well, I don't see anything wrong with this mod. The reason for this modification is to reduce the amount of wear on the top of the valve stem from the contact with the old style adjuster.

Hi Dan,
I'm running them in my 365 GT 2+2 and I met a vintage racer mechanic who runs them in their 250 GTO. I broke one after 500 km and replaced it. I now carry a spare in the tool kit. I worry about the ball lubrication but I'm still running them. The best solution is probably the expensive "nail head" screw that requires the rocker arms with the smaller rollers.
Since the covers are a pain to remove (with AC), I wish I could find a no-maintenance solution.
I can't advise. I can only pass along my experience.
Good luck!
