oil temperature

could anybody tell me where exactly at the engine the oil temperature is meassured? perhaps a loose cable in my car is the reason why the instrument isn't indicating correctly this data...

There is a fitting at the left rear corner of the engine sump casting that the oil temperature sending unit screws into.

dear Warren,
the needle jumps to maximum heat when I turn the key to its first position and stays there after starting the engine (obviously cold starting the engine)

Gerry, if the wire to the sender on the oil pan is shorted; the gauge will move all the way right. The little metal cable clamp afixed to one of the sump nuts is a trouble spot and often cuts through and shorts the wire. If not, possibly a bad sender. Senders often fail or give a bad reading. Jim
