Alternator rebuild???

Post by Dan Sands »

I just rebuilt the alternators which turned out to be pretty painless. I was able to locate new bearings, brushes and diodes from a locale alternator shop so the parts are pretty universal, that was good news. I needed to replace one of the terminal blocks as one of mine was melted from a loose connection. I bought a plastic casting kit at a local hobby shop made by Alumilite and was able to recreate the two piece block assembly with excellent results. When I got inside the alternators it was obvious someone had been there before and done a sloppy job. I found cold solder joints and they used tape to hold the brushes back for reassembly and the tape was still in there! They had repainted the pulleys and armature Chrysler blue. Is that the correct color? Or was it just what they had on the shelf? I have been looking at photos online and think the pulleys should be black? Some armatures I’ve seen are a shade of red. If anyone knows the correct color please let me know.
Thanks, Dan

Hey Dan,

Glad to see someone doing that kind of work. Did you by chance happen to document it with photos?
