Correct finish on front brake shields

Apologies if this has been discussed before. I'm new to this forum.
I was wondering what the correct finish is for the front brake shields.
Mine are primered and made of aluminum. Should they be "natural",
chassis black, or something else?

Are you sure they are aluminum? The pictures show what look to be rust spots and scratches through the primer. If they are steel, you should bead blast them and re-primer before applying whatever the correct paint is determined to be.

Welcome to the forum.

Somewhere in my box of pieces that I chose not to put back on the car are my brake shields. I believe mine are aluminum as well, but there does seem to be some kind of spotting in your primer. Maybe it's something splattered on the shields.

I'll see if I can find the original finish for these shields if no one comes up with an answer soon.

O.K., according to Francois, the brake cooling shields are semi-gloss black. The semi-glass I've seen on some pretty original cars is more flat than glossy, but you might not have much of choice when using a spray bomb.

Flat, Semigloss, and Gloss are all available in spray cans. Needed all 3 for my '47 restoration.

Sikkens Rally Black is the perfect semi-gloss black. Not too flat, not too glossy - looks perfect on suspension components. Not available in spray cans, it's a regular auto body paint so you need hardener and reducer and a spray gun to apply it.

Give Krylon semi -flat a try. It has a little less sheen than semi gloss so may be right for your application. If you want something durable you may want to purchase a pint of Glasurit. The code I use for th is type of stuff is 9198G in 22 line. If your really after a specific black got to the local paint store and ask to see their black color chips. That way you can pick exactly what you want, the paint line you want, and the quantity. I have done some poof can in the past and the stuff simply doesn't last. For all of the effort your going to you may want to consider using a more durable paint on you shields.

Hi Peter,

Krylon Semi gloss works for me too, and Eastwood's underhood black is also a good semigloss as far as sheen.

Tom Y - Why did you decide to leave your shield off? Heat issues or were they just too crapped out?
