Daytona Alternator Rebuild

Post by DrewA »

My Marelli alternator gave up the ghost today. Fortunately the battery had enough power to get me home. It is a Magnetti Marelli GCA 113 A, 12V-55A. After performing a number of diagnostics I am confident it is the alternator.

I do not want to switch over to the Delco Generator Conversion.

Has anyone had a rebuild on something like this lately who can recommend a shop or can any competent local shop do the job.

Regards,

Drew Altemara

I just sent the same response on Fchat, my friends at Mamock Automotive Electirc are the best rebuilders/restorers of alternators, starters and generators anywhere. I've used them for years, they have restored units for Ferraris, Maseratis, Duesenbergs Alfas, etc. Ask for Tom or Pat, Pat's the owner, 410-267-7531, they are loctaed in Annapolis Maryland

Drew, I just saw your old message on the alternator problem. Most of the charging system problems are the fault of the poor design of the Marelli voltage regulators. Be sure yours is OK before rebuilding the alternator. Jim

On the voltage regulators - i thought there was some place that makes solid state replacements that fit in the existing red boxes?

Or, do they repair these regulators?

Anyone have any experience or knowledge of this?

8339 - do you know what they charge to do a rebuild and do they actually restore the covers as well?

Ed, my friends at Mamocks usually charge between $200 and $300 for a rebuild. However, until they inspect the alternator they won't know what's wrong, if there is more to restore then obviously the costs go up. Send your regulator with the alternator. It is possible to retrofit a solid state regulator in the old case. Tell them you know Richard Garre at Radcliffe Motorcar Company.

Bill at GT Parts in Phoenix has rebuilt Marelli voltage regulators (red box) for the alternator systems. Jim

Jimmy, thanks - do you know if they converted solid state units or rebuild with the traditional electronics?

Ed, they rebuild the original units and update the existing circuit to eliminate the design flaws in the original. Jim
