Congratulations Admiral!!! You deserve the award more than anyone. In my humble opinion, this is what car collecting is all about, the long term ownership and provenance, the "hands" on restoration and pride of ownership. I hope one of the Ferrari magazines writes a story about you and your Mondial.

Bravo!

Nice to see the car in person on the lawn. I pretended to sit
in the cockpit...

Although I'm getting to the story about the Admiral's car, I wanted to share this image with everyone. And to think this joy was before they found how which award they had won! Congratulations to the Phillips family!

212 Export Vignale cpe

Post by srslusso »

Does anyone have any additional photos S/N history on the 1951 Ferrari 212 Export Vignale Cpe that came in 2nd in class M-2 to RADM Phelps beautiful car ?
I posted several photos of the weekend to http://picasaweb.google.com/srslusso also to http://picasaweb.google.com/athomeinthevalley
There are a few photos of Tom Yang's party there also of Bill Bowdish and myself Steve Steinhardt owner of Bills former 365GT 2+2 #11727 (she also attended the party). Some others there there were Mr Macauley and his beautiful 275GTB and Louise.

Tom, thanks for the diary entry - you really captured its essence for us. Michael Bayer in a boater was a sight to behold, and he should be required to wear it at all future tomyang.net gatherings.

While Dad, Michael B.. Billy B and I did motor/transaxle and tons of clean-up-blasting cabinet work, Dad and David Carte's crew really got the beast together in the last 3 months. I'm not recalling the whole crew, but Rory, the Brians, Craig Naff, Bruce Phillips and John Whittington deserve huge credit.

It was also nice to have various yangsters come visit us on the field on a stressful day that had a fairytale ending. Thanks to Tom, Yale, Billy and Zac for helping us in the final push (literally) to "the ramp".

thanks again,
Bryan

Can anyone share the technical side of the clutch/transmission
problem? I am just curious.

Thanks.

Rudy - we had a few issues gang up on us to cause problems w/ the clutch.

First, the nature of the Mondial motor is that it does not have a lot of power below 3800 rpm. Coming off the clutch in first much below 3800 will likely result in a stall. Dad's replacing the original all-metal clutch (no slippage - its either all the way in, or all the way out) in 1965 w/ a composition clutch from a 250LM helps somewhat.

The Tour, in our opinion, was not as well-managed as we had hoped. In the past, there had apparently been some attempt to group cars by age and type, with decent intervals between groups. This year, there were just two groups w/ at least 50 cars per group. As a result, we found ourselves in a slow-moving parade/traffic jam, behind a 1920-something Cadillac. The 70 year-old touring cars are able to go 5mph up a hill, but not the Mondial. We would have to hang back a bit and then charge the hill at a minimum speed - hopefully the older, slower cars ahead would make the top before we did. Seven times we had to stop cold on a hill - the camming of the motor and the race clutch just isn't made for that kind of exercise - starting from a dead stop on a significant incline.

Additionally, the shift linkage rod between the shift tower and the input shaft into the gearbox managed to rotate just enough that the shift fork was no longer catching reverse and first. The last two times we had to stop on an incline, we were not able to grab first. The clutch started smoking pretty badly, so we decided to spare it for the rest of the required driving for the weekend and pull out of the Tour. About 20 minutes of work back at the Polo Field (rotating that rod about 1/32") had the linkage straightened out and we once again had first and reverse.

Hi Bryan,

Thank you. I tried my best to describe the moment, but sometimes words just can't describe how great it really was. I'm honored to have shared it with you all.

I hope your Mom and Dad got home without incident. Send them my regards.

Bryan,

Thanks much for the details on what transpired. That is a harrowing
experience and I would think the organizers maybe could have sorted
the race cars from the funeral procession. I have been on some tours
with my vintage cars and realized the organizers never even got out
of their 1979 Ford Crown Victoria to assess the course. That really
gets me worked up and I am sure you were beyond frustration.

Glad the end made it all worthwhile, I was very pleased to see the
car on the lawn on Sunday. Congratulations to you and your family.
