Forum Software Upgrade
Forum Software Upgrade
Hi All,
Josh is planning a Forum Upgrade on Sunday the 26th. Any Posts during the upgrade period could be lost. The process could take several hours, but you'll know when we're back online when the forum takes on the new look.
I will finally concede, and allow avatars and emoticons!

Re: Hold off on Posting Messages on Sunday
OK, the upgrade is complete. I will probably be tweaking things a little more during the day.
Feel free to post, though.

Avatars are now supported. To set one up, click on "User Control Panel" near the top of the screen, then "Profile" and "Edit Avatar".

Looks good Josh. You will have to let us know what it does differently other than use smilies and avitars

I have no idea what else is new really. It certainly looks a little different. I think there are a lot of minor changes that most of us won't notice.

Re: Forum Software Upgrade
This new forum allows image uploads! We're going to give it a shot and store the images on my server. They're limited to 256K per image, and we'll see how much demand is in on my server.
Tom
Here's a test.

It looks great. It's great to see everybody’s cars in the Avatars. Great work Josh!
Just as a suggestion - would it be possible to open the Forum in a complete page rather than with the frame to the left like in the pictures below. You could make the yellow "TOMYANG.NET" link at the top take you back to the main page. Just a suggestion though. This is a great improvement as it is.

Re: Forum Software Upgrade
Seems like mine and mikewegener's avatars are trying to escape the page. Anybody know how to fix this?

Re: Forum Software Upgrade
I wondered about that myself. I'm on a Mac and reduced the car picture to about 20KB. I thought it was one of these PC/Mac incompatable things....
Re: Forum Software Upgrade
Basically the limit on size was too big for the layout that we're using. I've lowered it, so that pictures need to be no more than 150 pixels wide, and scaled down your avatars to fit within that.
It's a pain, but right now this version of phpBB won't auto-scale avatars for you when you upload them- it leaves them whatever size you make them..
It looks like there are some changes in the works to make that more automatic, but for now, make sure your avatar is 150x150 or less. If it's any bigger, the system won't let you use it any more.

I think something like that's a possibility. We could probably have multiple buttons up there as well. It's up to Tom, since it's his website.davidoloan wrote: Just as a suggestion - would it be possible to open the Forum in a complete page rather than with the frame to the left like in the pictures below. Whenever I want to see the Forum on the whole page, I use this link in my bookmarks:

Let's see how this new forum works for a few days, and we will consider changed if we really need them. Josh has done a stellar job in working on this forum for us.

Re: Forum Software Upgrade
I thought I would try out the avitar section by using the image that some consider degrading but which I enjoy, I'll see if the image upload thing works as well:
