Ok, I figured out how to reduce pic size.

The engine bay has had a preliminary cleaning- not too bad!

Other than restoring the engine bay and underside, we have added only a few "while were at its".

We have decided to get a proper radio.

Some brightwork will be redone (eg door handle and license plate lights).

We are going to re-do the front seats- the driver side padding has collapsed and the passenger side is torn. The rear seat and door panels are fine. Additionally the carpet and headliner are still presentable.

Look at the seats. I believe the perforated leather was special order. Hopefully they can reproduce well

Hi Dan,

I was going to ask about that.

Do you have an upholsterer in mind?

The perforations look similar to what Mercedes used. My first step would be to contact Bill Hirsch. He has been in the leather business forever and is quite the gentleman. He will send you samples right away and have very good advise.

The studs were removed easily. The heads are at the machine shop. And new parts are coming in.

Stephen has been working on the engine bay.

I know what the Dutch license plate looks like now but still have to figure out how to get one made.

I have had very thoughtful responses regarding the radio. It seems a Becker Mexico is the best choice. HOWEVER, when I read a for sale ad in NY Times from 1970 when Cornelius Ryan was selling the car, it specifically states the radio was a Blaupunkt signal seeking 2 speaker system. HELP please. Do I get the Becker or Bleupunkt???

The seats are a bit of a question mark too. I omly want to do the front seats as everything else looks fine. We are told the new front seat leather will need to be DYED to match the other leather. I an concerned it will peel off etc. THOUGHTS?? Can the result be durable??

Thanks,

Dan

The gas tank repair isnt perfect. They will have to cut open it from the top and repair from the inside and re-weld the cut piece back on- shouldnt be noticable.

You should get a Blauplunkt, Becker was more of a Mercedes item, (though not exclusively). The Koln is the Blauplunkt with signal seeking, (like the Mexico). Best, Yale

Yale, Thank you!! If nothing else I have documentation of what radio was there before so maybe its best to be consistent with that brand (Blaupunkt). The Mexico also seems approproate as I see many older Ferraris with the Becker. I am leaning toward the Blaupunkt.

Was the Koln the top line blaupunkt at the time?

Isnt Becker better than Blaupunkt?

I want to also thank Mike Wegener for his help with radios. After what Mike told me about Becker and Holland, I am surprised the radio in the car originally wasnt a Becker

What is the story about Becker and Holland? The Koln was the top of the line Blauplunkt, though I don't know the actual period that was true for. I had heard that the Becker Mexico was named after the Mercedes win at the 1952 Carrera Panamericana over Ferrari, (as well as others). There shouldn't be any difference in quality between those two brands. The Blauplunkt Frankfurt mono with a crappy Radio Shack speaker hooked up to my iPod in the Ferrari sounds pretty great. Ten years later in my 1974 2002 I have a cheaper transistor Becker and the sound is just awful. I think there was quite a degradation in quality as the early transistor radios were modeled to sound like the prior tube units. Yale
