Well we hit a milestone this weekend. Stephen MacKellar, my restorer/freshener, has finished! The car is ready to go back to Competizione and sports car for completion. The engine is being put together now and hopefully will be on the dyno this or next week. I plan to go there to see it run on the dyno. There is still lots to do at Richard's, but we are making progress.

Here is a list of stephen's final tasks:

Installing hood torsion bars and brackets
Fabricated two hood/torsion brackets that were missing (Richard confirmed this when I spoke with him yesterday)
Trunk lid removal, hood gasket install and re-install trunk lid
Install new fresh air hoses and clamps, install front inner fender panels
Install side louvers and trim
Install hood latch assembly and actuator rod
Install left side door handle
Install license plate lamps
Install new wiring, fuel and brake line clamps and hardware
Fix tears, replace several broke rivets, strip, prime and re-painted belly pan with hardened eurethane semi-gloss PPG paint
Install brake/clutch fluid reservoir bottles and bracket
Install front seats (temporary fit as they will have to come out again for engine/trans install)
Buff re-painted areas.

I hadnt noticed the belly pan was off the car and we didnt initially know where it was. I called Ferrari of Wash where it had been 2 years ago and fortunately they still had it! Stephen refinished it

What I like about this is that it does not appear
"over restored".

Hi all,

Here is the latest update:

The cosmetic freshening has been completed and the car is at Richards shop. The carbs were completely rebuilt at (I believe Pierce Manifold in CA). As i understand it, Richard has set the cam timing with a degree wheel and while the factory marks line up, it was not optimal so it has been set properly now- better than when it left the factory- and should run great. As you can see nothing was left undone and no expense has been spared! here are some of richard's words:

Good evening Dan, FYI pics form today. Distributors, ignition
wires, tubes, coils, etc. in place. We hope to have it mounted onto dyno stand
tomorrow or early Monday. Will be running next week!

I have a lead on a heater control valve assembly and necessary hoses, will
let you know. Got word today that Ansa Italy will be shipping me the
complete exhaust system next week, we will probably run the engine with the
front section of the exhaust/resonators in the dyno room.

Regards, Richard

Hi Dan,

Looks like Richard is doing a great job! I'm sure it's very exciting. The factory marks were probably right when the cams were new, but through the years, that long cam will twist with use. The lobes will go out of sync with the marks on the chain pulley. Checking for this discrepancy and compensating for this twist helps insure the best valve timing and optimum performance. The other way is to have the new cams made, or old ones welded and reground to factory specs.

I know Buurman is going to say something  , but no rubber grommets on the spark plug tubes? And don't forget to take the lettering off the spark plug wires!

Are you begging for reply Tom ?

This restorer seems to know his job

He refused to use the collapsable Fispa fiters,
Mannfilter would be the ultimate ones.

Second :isolation on isolation dont make sense !
its better that the plugwiring can move a bit when motor is hot.---- in stop and go traffic

third, important wire keepers are in place.
Will place something( commants )in numberthread in few time

its only a 27 year hobby here

Dan, A minor thing, the rubber bumper for the hood should be solid and not have a hole in it.

Original:

A long time ago Paul Leonard took an original of Lowell's to Italy and the rubber place made a mold, so I was able to get new ones. Re-Originals uses the same supplier, so you should be able to source the correct ones from them.

Since I got a strip of them, I might still have some.

PS, the switch should be silver cad, not gold cad plated.

Thanks very much for your replies! While I want everything to be as right as possible, I dont expect Pebble Beach/Cavallino perfection. You have to stop at some point or at least compromise a little. I think it will look fantastic to 99% of people and I really dont have any intention of showing it seriously. The main part for me is that it will function as new and look (about) 95% correct. I already have a 98 point car (328 at Cavallino and FCA) so I have already scratched that itch!
