I may even create an archive as we collect these threads for people to use as reference.
Great idea Tom. Oncer we finish the discussion, the thread will keep moving further back making it harder to find. So for those threads where we actually come to a consensus, we should preserve them for posterity. And should we ever finish the Horn thread, you should keep that one too.

Slightly off topic, but relating to suspension part coatings: Is there a difference between Yellow Cad and Clear Cad other than the color? Do they serve different purposes or were there different manufacturers of parts who used different coatings or were the colors meant to mean something? For that matter, why were some of the parts in the suspension system painted and others cad or nickel coated?

I found this a few days ago when I was asking myself the same question.

It doesn't answer everything but it's a start.

Interesting - It is very helpful for identifying the various finishes, but doesn't really say when to use them. It seems to say that from a corrosion standpoint, gold and yellow cad are the same and it never mentions paint. A thread on FChat is watching the restoration of 0337 AL (which is fabulous, by the way) and had the photo below. I know it is much earlier than our cars, but it is a great photo for this discussion.

So, why are the upper arm gold and the lower ones silver?

It's a photo illusion from the flash in the camera. The CCD in the camera has a color temperature of the flash, but the ambient light in the shop, and the bounce of the flash is falling on the upper control arms after bouncing off the color of the car. NEVER go by pictures, especially digital pictures, for color!

Fair enough. But in spite of the photo, which is what got me thinking, what is the reason for the different coatings?
