steering wheels U-Joints/needle bearings

Post by enio45 »

I was cleaning the steering shaft U joints today - repacked the needle bearings and knowing this is tedious - i was ever so careful not to lose any bearings....until i dropped the cup and it hit the tray where the bearings were sitting :( . Now I am missing one bearing - does anyone have any spare bearings available from an old U joint?? Please!!!!!!

Use a strong magnet to clean the floor until you find it. You'll find it sooner or later...

I'm pretty klutzy, so I bought one the Harbor Freight magnetic sweepers. Of course, the first thing I dropped after getting it was stainless steel.

Years ago I redid the front suspension on my 330 and I have some needle bearings:

0.097 in. diameter
0.617 in. long

Measure what you have and if the above can be adapted, I can send you a couple.

Hi Ed,

I won't be back at work until next week, but I can see if we have any spare bearings. I need dimensions.

Thanks for the responses - the following are the measurements for the steering wheel U-Joints.

There are 19 needle bearings in each cup as an FYI...

The needle bearing size is D= 1.97MM or .077in, L= 7.68MM or .302in

Thank you again for any help.....

I've also found that emptying the shop-vac and then vacuuming everything in sight does wonders for finding a lost item. The vacuum will pull a light item from under/around a leg, wheel, etc. Then careful inspection of the vacuumed up contents hopefully will let you find the item. I once lost a small spring loaded ball bearing (from the stalks in the steering column) inside the 330. It just sprung to who knew where. Anyway, it was in the vacuumed up stuff after I did the whole interior. And this works on non-magnetic items.

This also impresses the wife that you are actually cleaning something up.
