Borrani wheel cleaning

Post by 330GTC9333 »

As they say on WFAN radio..."First time, long time." First post for me, but I've been visiting the site for years. Great job Tom.

After a long mechanical restoration, I'm finally driving the GTC….and wouldn’t you know, the wheels got brake dust all over them.

I’ve searched this site and others and haven’t found any suggestions for what to use to clean the Borranis. I’m going to use soap and water to be safe, but wondered if anyone had experience using p21S on them? It would expedite cleaning the spokes. I’ve used this on all my other cars for years with good results, but didn’t want to take any chances.

Thanks in advance for any input.

Welcome to the forum! The car looks great.

If your Borranis have a good shine under the brake dust, a good soapy water should get the brake dust off. If you leave the brake dust on, it can eat through the finish, forcing you to put some elbow grease into them. I've heard of good results with P21S, but have not tried it personally.

I have a number of good aluminum polishing compounds that I use, but no matter what, it's a royal PITA, or should I say a pain in the fingers.

Good luck.

A finger stuck between the wires in the heist of most intensive polishing is most certainly a serious case or PITF. Last time it took 5 weeks for the pain to wear off. The good thing is that ache reminds you constantly of being lucky to own a car with Borranis! Best wishes, Kare

Boy, you have opened Pandora's Box now.........

I doubt more than two of the members on the website will agree on the methods or products to make your wheels like new. My 2 cents include washing with soap & water(p21S works fine or you can use any reputable wire wheel cleaner) using a Mother's (or any other) power ball drill attachment to save fingers in the small nooks and crannies. Once dry, I finish off with English Custom Polish, Nevr Dull, or any good billet metal polish, again using a power ball to buff and finishing with a good cloth rubdown. I may be anal, but then I apply a coat of wax. Once the wheels are clean and prepped, they are relatively easy to keep that way if washed and buffed regularly.

Of course, I have just learned the true zen of keeping wires clean......buy a set or Cromodoras for street use and keep the wires for show

Thanks to all.

Yes, the brake dust question was very pedestrian.

I really hate cleaning / detailing cars, so any shortcut is worth exploring…as long as it’s easy on the hardware. Never used the PowerBall, but will get one.

However, I have friends that love detailing and will work for beer. So that’s the plan for Sunday afternoon.

Hi 330GTC9333,

Good luck on the polishing. I've found no matter the tool, you'll eventually have to use someone's fingers! (That sounds dirty!)

I have a feeling that it will sound "dirty " only to Cornielius. Mike

Hey Cornelis, all I need is some Viagra to solve my electric window problem (I guess this would be EWD since they won't go up!)
Quantum physics was easier than those $#%&&^ windows. My PWs follow Planck's Constant...they're constantly a PITA. s

(BTW I use the stuff sold by Dayton Wire Wheel on mine...looks suspiciously like the magenta colored concoction sold by one of the more commmon vendors. I used to use PS21 on my Porsche Fuchs wheels with great success, haven't used it lately)

Cornelis, I (and everyone else, I think) meant all of this IN FUN. (Right, Rudy?) Hope nothing got lost in translation here; that can happen when we get to be too clever tossing around idioms, etc.
Regards, as always. s
