Computer Crash

Post by tyang »

Hi All,

I was putting together a post yesterday when my computer crashed. Yes, I back up, but it's never easy when you lose your primary computer. A trip to the Mac store (try getting help like that with Windows for free!) and they found corrupt files in my operating system that would be best to reinstall the OS after a HD wipe. Luckily, I think I can still slave my HD to our other mac to recover last week's files and e-mails. The Mac guy said that I could probably nurse the machine on a little longer after the clean install, but after 6 years of service I think I got my money's worth out of that machine.

The point besides venting about the passing of my laptop, is to remind everyone to BACKUP their computers, and that I may be away from posting for a few days before I can regroup!

Ouch... sorry to hear that.. Hope you're back up and running soon. Backups are important, no doubt!

I've got everything either backed up or mirrored, but mirroring isn't really a good substitute for a proper backup.. I need to fix that some time soon.. Maybe this weekend.

Thanks Josh. As soon as I get my new Mac sometime later this week, and spend some time transferring all my data, I'll be back up to speed.

I agree with Besters. My wife and daughters have Mac's and never seem to have the time to back them up. They do, however, have time to yell at me when the computer crashes and loses all their stuff! The time capsule is a wireless router that automatically backs up all your Mac's whenever they are on line. It also acts as a shared hard drive which is handy for photos and music. It has saved me a pile of grief!

Also if you're cheap and have a linux box or NAS lying around, it's possible to use them for time machine backups, which is what I've done.

I'm back up and running! It's going to take a few days to get completely organized, but at least I have the basics like posting updates to the site!

Thanks for being patient!
