Rear View Mirror

Post by hangten » Sun Nov 29, 2009 4:56 pm

The interior review mirror in my Lusso appears to need to ether have the mirror replaced or re-silvered. Has anyone on this board been through this process.

I have the basic mirror assembly apart and it appears that the mirror is set up with a separate piece of glass that enables the day-night function to work.

I am hesitating taking this apart as it looks like it could be a lot of trouble getting it back together correctly. Any advice before I proceed would be appreciated.

Aloha,
Mark

Hi Mark,

I've replaced the mirror inside my two way interior mirror, but not with a two way mirror. I've been told that two way mirrors are not readily available, and certainly not available through my glass guy. Also, make sure you measure the thickness of the mirror is the same as the one you replace. It might be from the difference from inch to metric conversions, but the Ferrari mirror was thinner than the American replacement you find at most glass shops. My glass shop with other guys who know better, save thin mirrored glass specifically for times when the thickness counts. You may need the same thickness for the mirror to fit back in the holder.

Hope this helps.

I expect that the mirror in your Lusso is identical to the one in my PF coupe as they were used through the early 330 GTs. I had mine re-silvered due to the thin glass.

See http://www.parrotbyte.com/kbc/ferrari/P ... Mirror.htm for some details.

Hangten-

I redid mine but unfotunatly, didn't take pictures. The hardest parts was finding the correct thickness mirror stock and cutting it perfectly. If memory serves- you are correct that 2 peices of glass are used for the day night transistion and there is a spacer and fabric tape at the top that holds the 2 pieces of glass at the correct angle to allow the toggle. I was able to reuse the spacer and tape.

I bought a bunch of the mirror stock so if you need some, let me know where to send it.

No tape or hinge in mine. The front is plain glass, fixed by a rubber outside to the frame. The mirror has a spring on the back that engages with the plastic toggle that sticks out the bottom. In the day position, it is against the front glass. In the night position, the bottom is tilted back, so the bright image is reflected downward. What is seen is the reflection from the plain glass only, thus not nearly as bright.

Note, my front/back nomeclature is relative to the mirror and opposite of the front/back of the car.

The spacer and fabric tape are quite delicate in these old mirrors
and somewhat like the Shroud of Turin, need to be treated with
extreme care.

Thanks for all the input! I have taken some pictures to show what is involved. The mirror appears to have a piece of clear glass mounted in front with a spacer at the top. There is cloth tape that appears to have been "doped" after the assembly is put together as it is tight as a drum around the perimeter and a slightly different color along the edge.

FYI, on the thin glass issue. When I had to do this for my Fiat, a helpful lady at my local glass store, after being unable to find the thin stuff, suggested a craft store. I was able to buy a round piece of mirror of the perfect thickness at Jo-Anne Fabrics, and then the glass shop was able to cut and bevel it for me.
