Trebelhorn Lusso

Post by Michael Bayer »

Tom: At the Yang/Garre event last year we were all quite taken with the 1964 250 Lusso owned by Richard Trebelhorn. I just noticed in the 1977 book the Berlinetta Lusso by Kurt Miska that that car, 5063GT is listed as having a rear spoiler and side vents, was anyone able to ascertain if those were as produced, or added later? Massini has opined that they are not factory.

My understanding is the car was modified by Tom Meade back in the day, so it probably came across the pond that way. I think I'm correct in saying it has been in this area most of it's life.

Sheehan's files say that Meade likely did the mods. Ed Waterman had the car in Arlington in '74. Trebelhorn bought it in 75, so, yes, it has spent at least 36 of its 46 years in the Mid-Atlantic!

that and $4 will get you a latte.

Last I heard, Mr. Trebelhorn was having minor body work done to remove some of the worst damage; It appeared that the driver's door had been sprung open, trashing the leading edge of the door skin and the fender in front of it. I believe he also has brokers a-plenty sniffing around his door - how many project Lussos could be left in the world?.

Hi Guys,

RIchard has had the car completely painted, and he just sent me pictures the other day. I'll see if he'll be O.K. if I post them here.

Believe it or not, I know of a project Lusso if someone is interested. It's a little out of my $$$ league.

The Yang event was great, thanks Tom and Richard! When was the last time you got to photo a Lusso with the door panels off? Trelbelhorn was more than gracious with allowing a full inspection.

Lusso oil temp gauge with numerals on the glass and tick marks on the face plate. Who restores these Veglia gauge faces?

And the Lusso is the first model with the "Ferrari flux capacitor"?

Hi Craig,

I've made the plastic blanks before for the small veglia gauges before and D&M restorations (suppliers page) has the silkscreens for the lenses. Palo Alto Speedometer and MoMa I'm sure does this too. The beveled lens for the speedo and tachometer are cut from a corvette lens. I know someone who has a jig to machine the center out from the corvette lens.

Autoflux is the indicator light for the electric fuel pump.

Craig ,
Maybe intertesting for you is to know:
The Italien (Europeen) gauges also use the instription AUTOFLUX.
Autoflux was one of the first producers of electric fuel pumps in the late 30th.
Ferrari used--- see below--- these on the first FI cars 166 etc
Can also be found on Alfa 6C& 8C , Maserati 300S and Bugatti.
later manufactorer is Fispa
