365 2+2 #12685 in DC

Post by lashss »

Guys, I haven't been very active on this site even though I remember when Tom first put it together way back in the day.

I wanted to share my project that is just about nearing completion. Even though it is a great car, I need to free up some money to finance some construction. Also, I really like projects and this one is just about complete.

It's chassis 12685, a 1969 US Spec model sold in Switzerland (from my
documentation). It has been
in the DC area since the mid 90s.

Chuck Wray and Grand Touring did an expert full restoration on the car from
1997-2000. At that time, the engine, trans, and all other mechanicals were
rebuilt. The owner also preferred the covered headlamps of the Euro models
and had Grand Touring add them.

I have just completed an exterior cosmetic restoration. New paint, fresh
re-chromed trim, re-finished wheels, new tires. The interior is in great
condition-the dashboard, gauges, and dashpad are all excellent with no
issues.

Mechanically, the car is very much like it was in 2000 with only 9k miles
covered since the full mechanical rebuilds that Grand Touring performed. The
engine builds oil pressure quickly and there is absolutely no smoke on
startup. It also pulls strongly and Radcliffe's compression numbers show the
health of the engine.

The trans also shifts perfectly even cold into 2nd and the clutch is
excellent.

Radcliffe Motors in Reisterstown, MD just did a full PPI on the car with
compression and leakdown numbers.

I have the original owner's manual with the original owner's notes, the jack
bag and associated tools.

It's a great car and some of you locals have seen it recently.

I'm asking $119k obo. If you have an interesting project, I'd consider a partial trade.

I will add some pics tomorrow. Please let me know if you have any questions- lashdeep at yahoo dot com

Tom, thanks for allowing me to post it here.

Thanks,
Lashdeep

I've had the privilege to maintain and repair some great 365 GT 2+2s at my shop, Mark Dempsey's, Brian Phillip's, Lash's QM is is every bit as nice and certainly one of the best on the market. Strong mechcanically, great paint and interior, a tremendous buy!

I was all over, in and under this car ten years ago when it was begin re-done by Chuck Wray and several times again very recently; it is as Lashdeep describes it. With the Chuck Wray motor rebuild, you can drive this thing for a very, very long time w/ relatively low operating costs.

I am sad to see this, another terrific Vintage Ferrari set to leave the Mid Atlantic Region, first Brian's, now Ash's, two of the nicest examples to be found, whoever gets Lash's will have quite a car! M

I see quite a few owners seem to sell 365 2+2's. Why do you guys think that is...perhaps though it is an excellent car it is not that entertaining to drive?

My guess is that the reasons for selling are all over the map; mine include needing another project, the economy, and already having an iconic car in the family that goes in the "let's keep this one for 50 years +" category.

The Queen Mother makes all the right noises, looks fantastic, goes like hell and has really nice torque. It is also a very big grand touring car. It is not a sports car, but it has the heart of a sports car. I always enjoyed pulling up the on-ramp onto an interstate, running thru each gear up to 5500rpm or so to well more than double the speed limit; that was the best driving experience I routinely enjoyed in my Queen Mother. I never really enjoyed trying to hustle it thru the twisties - it was a total handful w/ its weight, wheelbase and power steering.

I was also perpetually amazed at the big difference in feel between driving Bayer's 330GT and my QM - both grand touring cars w/ only .4 liter diference in displacement. The 330 seems tiny and is more agile compared to the QM. What my car lacked in agility, it made up for w/ low- and mid-range torque - very noticable w/ only 35ccs difference per cylinder. Bayer would usually accuse me of having hot cams in my QM. I think the comparison between my car and Bayer's was a good apples-to-apples comparison since they were both highly maintained cars.

As for Lashdeep; well, he just got married and now he's selling the Ferrari - you do the math. (how do you spell the sound a cracking whip makes??)
As for Dempsey; rednecks from Maryland's eastern shore traditionally need big farm vehicles for hauling whatever it is they grow out there. The QM trunk and back seat are perfect for this; he usually remembers to put down plastic first . . . ..

(for those not in the know, the last two paragrpahs are meant to be funny - Lash and Dempsey are my car brothers)

Local Gents, thanks for the kind replies and feedback on the car.

It really turned out great and runs very well. It has been a lot of fun the past two years without a doubt. My highlights? Doing 120mph to the fashion show in downtown DC. Bryan remembers that day...the sound the QMs make is just incredible. And despite the size/weight, this car really flies...

I've attached one pic and here is a link to many more:

My wife is a gearhead too, but we're already keeping one vintage car in the stable...so...

Thank you,
Lashdeep

Bryan, I've heard the whip crack and I had two choices...try to prove something or live a happy life. Guess what I chose?

If don't believe you've met the Mrs yet...really is a gearhead. Her name is Indy BTW...seriously!

The snow in DC has finally melted enough to get to the Queen in the garage...maybe we'll have enough rain to wash away the salt soon.

I'd like to bring 12685 to the FoW Tech Day and to Lifts and Lunch in April if anyone wants to see it in person.

Thanks!
