20 mph in 4th gear?

Post by Tom Wilson »

While rereading a bunch of my 1960's magazines, I noticed that they kept referring to how the GTE could smoothly accelerate from 20 mph while in 4th gear. Anybody out there tried that?

Tom,
Its getting time to put your UFO back on motherearth,
then you can test it by youself ,every ferrari can do this without problems when warm.

Second this is also the way to test on a used F-car if the clutchdisk is OK.
Let the car roll 20mph put in the 4th gear and accelerate FULL when not slipping, disk is still fine.

Yup, V-12s are very smooth engines. Very little Chug, chug chugging when lugging an engine (not recommended), and the 330s with more torque than the 250 engines do this even better.

I've been told that this is a good way to check ignition and carb tuning. The car should run smoothly clear up to the redline, accelerating more quickly above 3000 RPM. I've done this in my 330, starting in 5th gear at 20, but only going to about 90 MPH, not the 150 at redline.

Good to hear. I was afraid that Ferrari may have been exaggerating in its advertising :)

Even grandma, 3835, could do it.

I had never read this, as in floor it in 4th at 20mph, but after Tom Meaddows played with the carbs he demonstrated it. The other neat trick with a well tuned V12 is stand a quarter, on edge, on the air cleaner, rev her up, and the quarter will spin on axis and not fall over. Bit of a Geek trip, but fun none the less.

Gee Tom, why don't you try this yourself ?? Only kidding but I do agree with Cornelis. I hope the galcier is at least still moving forward, even if very slowly.
