1969 365GT2+2 power steering

Post by billmccarthy »

Hi,
My steering is fine aside from some annoying slack at the neutral point. I need to move the steering wheel a little bit when changing direction before it starts to take effect. I assume that it is a ZF unit.
Is it possible to have this fixed?
If so, what is the solution?
Can it be done by the owner with basic tools?
Has any one had this unit reconditioned?

Have you tried to adjust it?

Bill,

It's quite easy. The most difficult part is pulling two tie rod link ends.

If you will send me your email address, I'll send you a Word Document with instructions for the adjustment and an exploded view of which tie rod link ends to disconnect and reconnect. I have enabled my email preference.

Hi 365,
I'm sorry I'm so late answering. I just received my notice of your post.
I've sent you an email with the procedure attached. One might ask, "Why disconnect the tie-rod ends to adjust the steering?" The answer is, "So you can feel the resistance in the steering wheel when the steering gear 'centers'." If you adjust it so the centering has too much resistance, you will cause wear in the steering gear.

While the steering gear is centered, it's a good time to verify that the car rolls straight, otherwise you need an alignment. And while you are at it, make sure that one spoke of the steering wheel is vertical and pointing downward.

So the bottom line is if you are seeking perfection, then while the steering gear is centered, adjust its gear tooth clearance, align the wheels and center the steering wheel. If everything else is ok, just adjust the gear tooth clearance.

Good luck.
